It's cable, Road Runner, and they are fine with me using the router, they even detail on their webpage how to use a router, they just won't give support for the router if there's problems. It happens whenever, connected or not.

I suspect there's a problem with the router itself, which is annoying since I got it brand new.

Does your router work OK? I don't think it's normal it keeps rebooting and or resetting itself. Though it might be a hardware error here are some more suggestions:

Have you tried getting one computer to work on it properly and then add the second one?

Do you have your router set to automatically use DHCP and your TCP/IP protocols on both computers to accept DHCP automatically? You can find it in your configuration in the Network settings

There goes that theory.

You're probably correct in your assumption, whether it's the router, or the power supply to the router. One more thing to check before rasing some hell, is make sure you're not using a crossover cable on any of your network connections.

Failing that, take it back and kick someones a$$

You will need to connect both network cards together with cable, and then run the home networking wizard on your XP machine. It's quite simple and inexpensive to do.

Having said that however, you'll find that trying to use both machines on the internet at the same time will be quite painful with a dial-up connection, and will probably cause you more frustration that anything else. Using them seperately, ie. only one machine on the net at a time will be fine.
So I can safely forget about a router then? Ok I've heard I need the two network cards and I experiemented with Internet Connection Sharing and (I think ) set it up okay on this one (just tried it right now for experimental purposes). Is the cable just a standard modem cable or something different?
I guess they'll know what I want at Radioshack eh?

You need Cat5 network cable NOT standard modem telephone wire to connect the 2 cards.
