problem at startup
I just installed W&W and applied the 1.0 patch I found from HP. When I start up the game, as soon as it brings up the loading screen with the little hourglass it crashes but not to desktop. I have to hit ctrl-alt-delete and from there I can see an error box that says
"Application Error: D:Progra~1\Wizard~1\deep6.exe The instruction at 00423dba referenced memory at 02370000 The memory could nto be written" The mouse disappears while over this box so I have to hit enter to close the box. Any idea on how to fix it? I'm using windows XP and am running it in compatibilty mode for windows 95 (I read somewhere that you should use 95 and not 98, but I tried under both and same problem). dxdiag is attached. Re: problem at startup
Welcome to the boards, ardo123!!!
I believe if you read through the Tech Tips thread you will find a solution for this problem. Others have encountered it so you are not alone!! I'm not very techy but Bungleau is and he checks the boards regularly. If you can't figure out the solution from the Tech Tips, I'm sure Bungleau will be able to assist you! Wyv |

Re: problem at startup
Crazy as it sounds, I'd recommend reinstalling and running the game unpatched. (and in Win95 or 98 compatibility)
My laptop gave me a similar write error with the patched game, but the straight-off-the-CD game runs fine. Even if you don't cheat, you can skip the merchants' introductions everytime you step into their shops |

Re: problem at startup
Thanks for the welcome.
I already checked the tech tips thread but it didn't help. That's why I posted. I'll reinstall and try again without patch but it crashing like this is what lead to finding and installing the patch in the first place. |

Re: problem at startup
I uninstalled and reinstalled without using patch and am getting the same error. Would somemind mind sending me an unpatched deep6.exe?

Re: problem at startup
Sorry for the delay in showing up here... what are the specs for your deep6.exe? What's the exact file size (down to the byte), and what's the date and time of the file? If you can also get the version (from Properties), that will help as well.
Let's see what we've got...

Re: problem at startup
That's the same size (and date) as my original version deep6.exe. The patched version is 2,304,147.
Have you taken a look through the Tech Tips thread for the XP fixes in there? Specifically, other programs running, free space, fixed virtual memory, and the like can make a big difference. I'm going to be on the road the next couple of days, so I may not be able to respond as easily as I'd like. I'll check back in, though, to see what you've got.

Re: problem at startup
Yeah, I read/did all of em, and nothins worked. If I patch the game it has the exact same problem with the exact same addresses.
