use -window in the command line.
But afaik, you can't switch back...

I usually play with: -32bit -nointro -noplaycine -hardmouse

Malleus

more command line options

When in Darkstone (without the -window), the alt-tab windows shortcut key will cause DS to minimize and hang out on the taskbar which causes your desktop to display again (you may want to hit escape first, though, so you don't get killed in the background). Clicking DS on the task bar will maximize it and put you back in the game.

Note that DS places your graphics card in 3D accellerated mode - using the OpenGL or D3D settings for screen usage as well. DS must run under DirectX - using DIrect X to access video and sound card services. So no, it is not 'Dos-Compatible' directly.
