The only things you really miss out on with an Invoker are Executioner's Eyes, AoE spells, and summoning spells. (Why cast Flame Arrow when you can purchase flamethrower pots?) Demarches of Mask and Lorekeepers of Oghma can learn EE, Morninglords of Lathander can learn firey AoE spells, and bards can conjure anything up to level 6.

Why not try playing the game with another specialist mage and see how it goes?
