Has anybody read any of his books? I just read 'Consider Phlebas' and liked it but I thought I would like to know if any one is a fan and which of his books you recommend.

Definitely a major fan here.
I have read almost all of his fiction (waiting till my boyfriend finishes the latest one, Dead Air, and I haven't finished Song Of Stone myself, but apart from that I read all his fiction) and most of his scifi. In case you didn't know, Banks writes SF under the name Iain M. Banks (M stands for his family name Menzies) and fiction under the name Iain Banks. Of his scifi books, I'd recommend that you just start reading them in order. After Consider Phlebas comes The Player Of Games and Use Of Weapons. Both are brilliant. Of his fiction, try The Crow Road, Walking On Glass, The Bridge, The Wasp Factory, Complicity.... heck try em all! Enjoy!

I really liked Player of Games and Use of Weapons. But all of his culture novels are superb. His mainstream fiction (under the name without the "M") are actually pretty readable as well, it's not too common you see the same guy writing in two widely different genres like that.

They aren't as wildly different as you might think at times - Canal Dreams and Walking on Glass spring to mind particularly.
I'm a really big fan personally, trying to work my way through both genres at present, reading Feersum Endjin currently but after that I have The Crow Road and Excessions to get through. Absolutely amazing books on the whole - I haven't read one of his I was dissapointed in yet.
