I've upgraded my OS from Win ME to Win XP. But now almost half of all my programs do not work anymore....I've paid for some programs and they've turned into trial versions after XP is installed, and prohibits me from using them again since they expired. Does anyone know the reason why? How do i fix it?
Also, i've bought a cordless optical mouse, installed the new driver that came along with the product. And now for most of the games, the right mouse button doesn't work anymore(or malfunction---the character keeps performing a certain action that is assigned to the right mouse button)!!!Is it a problem with the driver? Or is it Win XP again this time?

Did you get the upgrade or the full install from scratch? Is it home of Professional? It makes a difference, and would help the knowledgeable ones here help you better.

Also, what apps don't work anymore?
For the mouse, go to the vendors homepage and download the latest XP driver for it. The one shipped with the mouse is almost always out dated. That said, you might be able to roll back your install of XP, if you really don't like it. I think it is much more stable and reliable than ME, not to mention more secure. But, to each their own.

Well, I hate to say it, but a clean install of an OS is almost always better than an upgrade. It's been that way since Windows 3.x and it's not gotten any better in 12 years.
I agree, though, with updating the drivers. Also, reinstalling the apps would probably help, as there are a lot of changes in the registry between Windows Me and Win XP. -Sazerac

Okay, my video card's dvd player doesn't work. The CD comes with the video card, but after i installed it, it says that the evaluating version has been expired, weird....
As for the mouse, i checked the driver's properties and it shows that the date for the driver that i'm currently using is even later than the date available on the website. If i want a clean upgrade of Win XP(installing Win 98 then XP), i don't have to activate again, do i? Or do i need to purchase another activation code?

the software for your dvd expiring sounds strange, try the vendor of the vid card.
you may need to reactivate XP but M$ graciously "allows" you a certain # of activations based on hardware config before they ? you. call M$ if you have problems on the clean install.

Man, you always gotta do your homework before you upgrade. This isn't WinXP's fault or Microsoft's fault. It's your fault for not checking what software is compatable and what software isn't. Microsoft can't possibly make every piece of pc software out there work with their product. Not all software works on every operating system and it can't be expected to. Like Saz said, you really need to reinstall everything. Wipe your drive and start from scratch. You'll save yourself lots of time and trouble in the long run.

Okay, why does problems like to rise up one after another?
Everytime i open the search function in Win XP, this stupid Microsoft Office 2000 self installer will pop up. Although i already have the office installed, it just keeps executing everytime i search for files or images. Any ideas? With all these problems, should i just format my whole hd and perform a clean install of Win Xp instead? What i mean by clean install is to install Win 98/Me first, then the Xp upgrade. I have not the full version of Win XP.

Remember though, that it isn`t Microsoft`s responsibility to make their Operating System compatible with every single program anyone could use; instead, it is the responsibility of the people who make the programs to make them compatible with an OS. If your programs are incompatible, check for patches, or replace them with ones that ARE compatible. |

I did exactly the same thing you did, except that before I upgraded I did the following:
1. Deinstalled all my existing WinME drivers (the install program should do this for you) 2. Made sure there were existing XP drivers available for my devices for download 3. Crossed my fingers and prayed It pretty much worked ok, except for the fact that my HP Laserjet doesn't work anymore - it will work on my sister's laptop, but not on my WinXP machine. If you're having this many problems I would recommend you clean-format and reinstall it - WinXP hates being installed on top of ME, especially if you have device driver conflicts. Hope this helps. |
