Well, keyboard characters, that is... Basically, I have an English/American keyboard on Windows XP Home Edition. How do I write German characters such as "ä", "ö", "ü" and "ß"? (Had to copy and paste those )

Thanks .

In word click on insert then find the symbol and memorise the shortkey.

...Or just do it the old-fashioned way and use alt-codes (alt132 results in ä, for example). Not the easiest way, but if you've got several of these memorised over the years anyway (like I did, legacy from my IBM-influenced childhood ), it really *is* the quickest way to create those special characters. Well, apart from having a keyboard that's equipped with special shortcut keys, that is.

You can also hit CTRL + SHIFT + : before typing the character, to give it an umlaut. It doesn't work here on IW, it seems, but other places I've tried it does (including MS Word).

ctrl + alt + letter gives the line accent like this: áéíóú guess that's only useful for hungarian though... otherwise do as Groj says

On my mac, I just have to push option- s for that one. The umlauted ones don't show anywhere.
