I do not feel right fighting these spirits necessarily. Is it necessary to kill these spirit leaders - or is there some way not to kill them.

The spirits are all pissed off, so they will fight you whether you want to or not. You're going to have to kill them to get at the info that you need concerning Wilfdeyn, anyway.

You should only have to kill the ones in the tombs. The ones above ground (like the Bear Spirit) don't need to be fought.
