Sell the gems!!!
As I recall there is only one "gem" which is of any importants - the "eye of the colanth" which you will find in DragonSpire. Open your inventory and right click on a book - IF your character is capable of using that book you should see the option to "invoke". Hope that helps!! |

Yep.... gems and gold are there to be sold. I usually keep one of each type of gem so I don't have to identify new ones when I find them.
Personally, I sell all the books I find. You get more mana points when you learn the spell at level up than when you learn it by book, and by the end of the game every extra mana point can be really, really helpful. The only exception I'd consider would be something like Cure Poison before going through the Serpent Temple, or Firestorm or Flame Drop before facing the salads...

In case you don't know pr - the "SALADS" are Amazoni Mantraps - there are some west of Ishad N'ha and they are very difficult to handle at this point of the game - they are sort of a "rite of passage".
One word of warning (aside from SAVE SAVE SAVE) - when you do run into the salads - don't lead them back to town! |

Sorry... I forgot to explain the joys of the salads. They're also the inspiration for the unofficial Gael Serran motto... They WILL hunt you down! 'Cause once you've activated them, they will find you... no matter where you go. And if you go back into town, they will eventually be waiting for you right outside the gates.
I do believe that everyone's first exposure to the salads has been fatal... unless they read about it here first, and did all the things that the experienced Gael Serran adventurers always do when they go salad-hunting.

Actually that depends...
If you are playing a party of more than one spellcaster and you do not intend to play the game more than once, it might be a good idea to invoke the books. Otherwise your spellcaster(s) will not get to learn all the spells before the game is over.

In all my multiple spellcaster parties, every caster has learned every spell. I do tend to change professions every 5-13 levels, though, so that may have something to do with it
