Thieves should be able to wear elven chain.

According to IEEP 1.05, any class EXCEPT for pure mages or non-armor wearing class (e.g. Kensai, Shapeshifter) can wear the elven chain (e.g. Bladesinger).

You can also download an item description editor from Kevin Dorner's Baldurdash site which will correct the descriptions of HUNDREDS of items in BG2, so you know which kit can wear/use what. It's huge but excellent. A warning though: if you have any custom items, it will overwrite those too - even if they're not in the BG2 folder.

So, why aren't I capable of wearing it. It is the chain mail that you receive by killing those who want to kill Viconia.

Is it elven chain, dark elven chain, drow chain, adamantite chain or bladesinger chain? What's the description?

If you mean the chain mail from the fanatics in the Government District, then no your thief cannot wear it since it is normal chain mail.

It is a dark elven chain mail.

And no, it isn't the fanatics, but a drow and a demon.

Ah, THAT kind of chainmail. Alas, Drow chainmail may be heavily enchanted, but thieves can't wear it.

What you may be referring to is Elven chainmail - chainmail from good Elves. I gave it to Imoen, and it allowed her to use her stealth and magecraft abilities at the same time. Cool stuff.

I found it by hanging around the exit to the Underdark - perhaps you're not there yet. Every now a Drow warparty and an Elven force are fighting, and you can aid the elves. I simply scavenged the armour from the bodies of the Elves, leaving the Drow alone. To my knowledge, there is no other way of obtaining a set of Elven chainmail, beyond using Shadowkeeper.

And it's green! What more can you ask for, eh?
