My wife has a VAIO PCV700 I think, this is a desktop. The only trouble we have ever had was the Ethernet card burned out shortly after we got it. Best Buy paid for the new one and it has been great since. She bought one of the VAIO's that have the attached keyboard that folds up into the screen. The whole thing takes up the same amount of desk top space that a flatpanel display and keyboard might. Very slick. Loads of Power.

I want a mac because of the compatibility issues and the lack of major exploitable holes in their software...but I'd easily settle for a windows comp, provided it wasn't going to give me too much trouble...I suppose, though, I'll just need a good firewall at the University...and should probably not shoot so high for a laptop...

which, btw, neatly makes it so that I really shouldn't get a mac, 'cuz the new ones are ridiculously expensive...if you get a high-performanc one, that is!

Don't forget that Apple (American link) offers student discounts.

You can buy a (powerful) G4 iBook for under $2000. (Australian)

My dad's got a Vaio laptop. He runs linux and win2K on it dual boot and I don't think he's had any major problems with it. It's a pretty sexy little machine as well, very slim and lightweight
