I'm looking to pick up a decent strategy game and I was wondering if anybody had any recommendations? I've played (and enjoyed) Starcraft and Warcraft III. And I played some of Homeworld II, though the controls were a bit hard to get used to.
I like RTS games but get a bit tired of racing to harvest and build stuff before somebody overruns me. On the other hand, I'm not sure I'd get into micromanaging the economies of multiple cities in a game...while trying not to get overrun. I was thinking about Age of Mythology, Rise of Nations or Civ III. Anybody have any ideas about these or other games that might be fun?

Hmm. I've been playing these two not-so-popular games, but they are great actually: Conquest: Frontier Wars and Sumbarine Titans. You might wanna try Star Trek Armada 2, btw.

Me reccomends Age of Wonders, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic and Dominions II.
No idea 'bout AoM and RoN, as I don't play RTS. Civ III is quite fine, IMO, but I'd consider FreeCiv instead.

Civ 3 is a very recommendable choice, as its probably the best strategy game out there(Though almost at par with Civ2, as that's a bit simpler and doesnt require an expansion for multiplayer games...). I can highly recommend it to any one who cares for strategy games...
The strategy game Im playing right now is Medieval: Total War, which is quite a good game, though very hard and it seems the enemies like to ally against YOU, no matter what faction youre playing...still, quite an enjoyable game on all standards. A classic RTS game would be C&C: Red Alert, which is possibly my favourite game of the genre...havent tried the later RA:s though, so they may be worth checking out. thats about all I can think about, as Im not really a strategy games "specialist"...just a fan of a few games out of the genre

How about trying the game which I thought Warcraft III derived many of its ideas from: Warlords Battlecry 1 or 2? If you RTS, there should be something in this for you to like.
Alternatively, you could always go back to the 'roots' and play Dune 2 which was a real tough challenge to finish for me when I played it in 94.

I really liked Rise of Nations. It's campaign mode is really fun. Age of Mythology is quite fun also, and very replayable in terms of multiplayer.
I always liked Red Alert 1 and 2 personally. They were a lot of fun, and even though Red Alert 1 is fairly old, and I've beaten it umpteen times, its still very enjoyable. |

Civ 3 was very addictive, and time consuming, since normal games take an average of 2 hours XD. Wc3 and sc are always options. Are we talking only of pc based or console based too?
