In Danish we use the name "Jul" which stems from the Pagan/Viking holiday held around that time. Christmas is 0% Christ and 100% greed in most areas, in my opinion.

In Denmark we call X-mas ( ) for 'jul' - so we have no need to abbreviate it

The origins of the word 'jul' isn't clear - it goes back to the 'heathen' days of celebrating winter solstice.

heathen days of celebrating winter soltice? i protest the word heathen it has been used to mean something is bad, and i'm not a bad person for celebrating winter soltice. at least i don;t think i am. anyway about the x....my name is christi, so some ppl have gone about shortening it to xti. kinda silly i think, but oh well. i think the only way to fight comercialism of the holiday is with you're own family, there is no way one person/family will inspire more than his own family to change. i like this holiday season for giving, not getting. and i let others enjoy it too, like i know nathan has put presents for me in justi's bedroom, but i'm not going to look for them, if i do he will be robbed of seeing me surprised. i want to give him that. as well as many otehr things, i can't wait to surprise him with what i want to get him. i'm sooo anxious. giving is sooooooooo nice. i love seeing ppl's faces light up. i could go all christmas without getting one present as long as i could give.

I type xmas all the time because its faster. I don't see myself changing any time too soon, so I'll apologize in advance to those who have X-cessive sensibilities.
