The second best NPC spellcaster would be either Jan or Aerie, probably Aerie.

If... by spellcaster you include Priest spells, then yes, Aerie is the second best.

If you only meant Mage spells however, then Imoen is the second best.

Sorry to have to correct you Dundee, but Jan is better than Imoen since Imoen has less XP than the rest of your party when you get her back again.

Hmmmm... potentially though, Imoen is the second best Mage, and Nalia is a better Mage than Jan anyway. With careful planning and reserving of subquests, Imoen can be brought up to speed as a Mage.

Well, Jan does have the added benefit of being far funnier than both Nalia and Imoen.

True that, and he is the best long term NPC thief to boot.

Well... come to think of it, he is the 'only' NPC thief worth his/her salt, Imoen barely makes the cut as a competent thief.

However, Jan was asking for second best spell caster, if this was a poll on second best funniest NPC, it would be Jan all the way, Minsc and Boo being the first of course.

statistics-wise and counting only mages, than it's essentially a tie between Nalia and Imoen. their relevant stats (Int, Dex, Con) are the same while Nalia is stronger and Imoen has higher Wis and Cha. the sum of their stats is the same though.
however, Imoen does miss the early part of the game. that means she will always be lower level than Nalia if you had her from as early as possible. this means Nalia will always have the potential of being the more powerful mage of the two.
but then again, Imoen's thieving abilities are enough for her to be the only thief in any party, while Nalia's four thief levels are not nearly enough.
