Well it sure isn't the Americans.

And, to counter any "Ah but if we had our best players.." nonsense, just remember, that patriotism, and mental dedication ON THE COURT wins matches. Countless times in sport, the psychological strength of a team means a lesser talented team get's over the favorite.

American basketball/baseballers patriotism, national pride and mental dedication are so impressive that many didn't even show up for the games.

So, yes, those players are factored into the assertion that Cuba are the best baseball nation in the world right now, and that Italy or Argentina are the best basketball nation in the world right now.

Ahhhhhh don't ya love it??

Kind of like when the English first lost at cricket. Or football.

Iverson is cool though. A Patriot who tried hard. Congrats USA for the bronze. The guys that did show did their best in the end.

Quick update: Italy lost to Argentina the gold medal match (84 - 69).
Good match, with Italy who held their own until the end of the 3rd quarter, but lost in the 4th. Argentina was, all in all, stronger, although the score is a bit too heavy on Italy. A great, historical result for us, anyway, since our only other medal in basketball at the olympics was in Moscow 1980 (silver), when the USA drem team (a true dream team) boycotted the olympics.

Well the Opals went down to a magnificant USA womans basketball team. Even when the Opals (Australia) went 10 points in front in the 3 quater the USA kept there cool, stepped up a gear and won. It was great to see the USA women weep with delight at winning gold. the pride they had in performing for there country was there for all to see, unlike the pathetic performance from team USA mens. (those that had the guts to turn up at least that is)
