Fellow IW's, we have a new bird here at the backyard feeder. Still a bit shy, so no photo's yet. He holds his own with the Brown headed black birds, and the Common Gackle's, and is comparatively sized as well. Have only seen one, not sure about a mate. Cannot find him listed in the field guide or on the County Audubon Society.

Beautiful bird with bright and distinct markings.
Head: Mostly black, white spots.
Beak: Short stubby like a Cardinal, strong yellow in color.
Neck: Throated bright red on white, then fading to black.
Body: Mainly black, spotted white, distinct spotting as opposed to blotchy.
Wings: Outer, white on black.
Inner: Black on white.
Tail: Long like a 'jay bird' banded black & white like a common woodpecker.

Crouches and almost hisses (like a cat) with beak open when the Gackle's want him away, stands his ground well. In the fact, the only one that will not move when harassed by the other birds. Gets along well with the others, to include the 'Jays.

Yes! A Grosbeak! Have seen the female too as well then. Easily confused with the native larger Carolina Wrens we have here.

Tanks!

We get Rose Breasted Grosbeaks at our feeders on occasion, they're a striking bird. I really enjoy the finch family, lots of variety and 'personality'. We've got Zebra's in the house and get a good variety at the feeders.
