I don't know how many of you saw this one; no spoilers here, though.
I decided to see this on a lark, figuring "why not sit back with some popcorn and enjoy a cheap slasher flick?". I was wrong. This movie was much scarier upon reflection than I initially thought. By now, you're probably thinking "what?! are you insane?" Here is why. The staple of the horror movie is that almost invariably we don't know why the slasher is doing the slashing, unless the slasher is also undead. The slasher is simply a homicidal maniac with an implement that causes lots of pain and loss of blood. The difference with Hostel is this: not only are we shown why the slasher is doing the slashing, but it is completely believable. I left the theater and thought to myself, "you know...this probably does go on somewhere in the world right now". That, folks, is scary. Thus, although I didn't think I would ever say this, go see Hostel if you haven't done so. It is much better than I initially thought.

Hostel was certainly hard to watch. You just know that somewhere, somewhen, there is an equivalent of Elite Hunting.

I haven't seen this, but have been intrigued by it. I read that the idea came to the Roth through a conversation with a internet critic who pointed him to a website that talked about such a place as you see in Hostel. Not that anyone believes that site was true (it's gone now), but it's not hard to believe that something like it does.

What made the flick so good is you don't really know who (or what) "the slasher" is until late in the story. Also, there's a LOT of front story to the movie, making you think at the 1 hr point "Did I come to see a slasher flick, or just some good soft porn?"
Oh, and there are more hottie naked Euro babes in this thing than you can shake a [censored] at. |

Not that we're complaining about the first half of the movie, mind you. *ahem* It keeps the popcorn warm.
That is the point I was making--such places almost certainly exist. Believability = scariness.

yeah I enjoyed this movie a very reasonable amount,I certainly believe such places are true, and the women in the movie were smokin'. and the violence was very graphic. as a guy what more can you ask for from a horror movie.
