Sorry people, I'll have to agree with Scholarcs, if anything, that article almost made me laugh. To me it reeks of american: "We're so much better than everyone else!"
You're no better or worse than any other part of the world, we're all human, we all share human faults. I don't have any sort of dislike especially for america, just for anyone or anything who gets really "Holier than thou." |

I'd be challenging those figures Johnny. 30% sounds way too high. Out of 280 million we're talking 80 million odd. I saw a pie chart a couple of weeks ago. African Americans and Hispanics were between 8% to 12% EACH and they are very visibly numerous. Impacting the culture immeasurably. The Irish were so numerous that the American accent was permanently affected by it. The Australian accent (except for Adelaide) is based on East London (cockney) accent, and New Zealand and Canada have Scottish based accents. One would think that if the Dutch were so numerous the accent would have been affected as it was in South Africa, or that the vocabulary was affected in the same way Yiddish (from the Jewish immigrants) has moved into American language. |

In the spirit of the day I'll wish all Americans a happy Independence day. I hope it goes peacefully. I'm riding the London Eye today and I can't help feeling it's a bit of a target.
I'll leave my comments on the paragraph about helping Afghanistanis to get their country back until tomorrow.

Does Denmark have more Muslims than Afgahnistan? Does Denmark have Cherokees and all the other nationalities mentioned? Was Denmark founded in a similar fashion? Or was it itself an Empire of destructive conquest perhaps. Sorry mate. There's no comparison. It's not a matter of better or worse, it's just facts. There's no declaration of Danish independence. The Swedes, Norse and Northern English would have needed declarations of independence FROM the Danes. The Faroes and Greenland still do don't they? Oh resident of an IMPERIAL MONARCHY. [ 07-04-2002, 05:57 AM: Message edited by: Yorick ] |

I actually kind of like certain aspects of Celtic culture, too. (But then I believe in learning to see the beautiful in any culture.) I've read certain stories from the Mabinogeon -- and the Arthurian legends, of course -- and I have to say I find them quite fascinating. They almost make you want to believe in that... Celtic Twilight...

The only opinion I have on my homeland is that this damn place should be nuked for the good of the world. And even if fact is that you ARE better than someone then it's not really polite to go around telling others so. Don't people ever consider the virtue of humility? If the US was humble then perhaps they wouldn't recieve accusations of considering themselves better than others |
