The problem is, that the laws passed to prevent gay marriage prevent gay civil unions as well. They can't get any of the benefits of a life partner that the rest of us can get, such as included on employer based insurance, for example. These laws do put somebody else's values on another segment of the population, whether that other segment wants it to be or not.

Yes and that's why the laws need to be corrected or annulled. Anything that says it is a "Defense of marriage act" should be properly renamed so that the American people know what they're voting for. Have you seen a DOMA on a ballot? It's sickening how small the print is. I'm sure most people sign them thinking it's something good without realizing it's a law of oppression and bigotry. Maybe that's what it should be renamed: The oppressive bigotry act. I don't see why GLAAD didn't consider a political ad campaign or something they could've probably gotten away with it. Then again if every initiative put forth was actually named what it actually is (that is to say, outside of the opposite of what it is as is the current tradition) we'd have to deal with the "Wire tap-you act" the "Leave our children in the dust act" and the dozens of "we want votes" acts.
