does anyone know how the control settings can be changed?
the default ones are a pain in the ass and are keeping me from continuing to play this otherwise pretty good looking game.
i am used to rpgs that let you move your character with one of the mouse buttons
and pick up items with just one button or key such as wiz 8.
any help out there?
also does anyone know if Gothic-2 is the same way?

Gothic 2 is the same way, although you can remap the keys in Gothic 2 if you don't like the default settings.

I'm told if you give it a chance the Gothic control scheme will grow on you. I personally only played G2 and I remapped the keys to parallel my FPS keymaps... so I can't comment on that.

Gothic 1 has very poor mouse support. You can use the mouse to change the camera angle only. You can only attack using keyboard.

Gothic 2 has slightly better mouse control. You can use the mouse to change the camera angle and as well as to attack and blocking. Anyway, people like me who already used to the keyboard control scheme tends to leave it as it is.

Once you are used to the keyboard control scheme, you actually start appreciate it. IMO, keyboard control has the best "feel" of fighting, whereas the new mouse+keyboard controls feel like playing a 3D Diablo. Anyway, that is just my opinion.

Gothic uses a strange keyboard set up which is a challenge to getting into the game.

It is also very hard in the beginning.

In time you will learn the controls like the back of your hand.

It is in my top 5 games ever its incredible. One of the rare games that just gets much better as it goes along.
