Lone Star Nation - Could Texas go it alone?
Interesting. Do you think they could do it?

Re: Lone Star Nation - Could Texas go it alone?
As a counter to ElfBane's arguments, I refer you to the website for Texas Secede!, where they analyze the case for Texas' ability to secede.
Personally, I believe the arguments that support the idea that Texas can secede, as can any other State; this argument is both legal and constitutional because this nation is actually a political union of smaller political subsets, not one large group based in Washington, D. C. Realistically, of course, secession will never happen for a couple of reasons: 1) you will never find anyone willing to be the first one to take that step, 2) the national military would step in and force the rogue State back into the Union at gunpoint, and 3) any foreign nation backing a State in secession would potentially lead to a full shooting war with the United States. Honestly, I am not certain what NPR is trying to do with this article. Are they trying to drum up anti-Texas or pro-United States sentiments? Or both? Is this a subtle ploy to get a show of hands about which people are willing to support secession so they can be targeted by the government later? I wouldn't mind if Texas did secede, but we would have to partner closely with Mexico and it would be a wildly difficult first 10 years until things begin to settle down. Final analysis: it will never happen. At the very least, by the time it does happen there wouldn't be any way to save the United States as it currently exists--we would be beyond the point of no return.

The NBA would lose 3 hallmark franchises, unacceptable.

Re: Lone Star Nation - Could Texas go it alone?
Noty and I discussed this the last time the topic was on everyone's mind and we concluded that if Texas goes then probably a dozen more states would also go: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Hawaii, Alaska, and possibly even Oregon and Washington.
Needless to say...the zombies would have to be attacking (my generic phrase for "the end of the world as we know it") in order for this to occur. Things would have to be bad. Really bad.

The majority of the Southern States; Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tenn. South Carolina, and North Florida would go too, if Texas went... But yeah it would have to get very bad for it to occur.

Wow, some epic problems to solve and this is even worth national news coverage? NPR is wasting our time with sensationalistic daliances.
Oh, and at least add: Willie Nelson, Austin and the surrounding hill country, and ZZ Top to the list of stuff we get to keep. That's right- get a new stinking Capital you suckeeders! It won't be a clean divorce.
