Most home users run their computers at 800x600 or 1024x768 max resolution.

So to be able to cover everyone, you should design at 640x480...actually, design with a screen width of 580 to allow 60 pixels for the window borders, toolbars, etc.

If that's too limiting, design at 800x600, bearing in mind that about 1/3 of the browsers will not be able to display at that level and that people will have to horizontally scroll back and forth.

If you want to design one at a higher resolution, make sure you design a low-resolution one as an alternative for people with older browsers.

Hope this helps!

Hmm, I guess most stat places have their own numbers, but Statmarket a leading company had a worldwide setting with roughly these numbers.. (Both home and companies)
800x600 Was largest with just over 50 %
1024x768 Was second with 35 % (This is the one that eats up 800x600 the most!)
640 x 480 and 1280x 960 was roughly the same due to their numbers..
1152 abd others hac about 1 % or something..

These settings vary alot but the most common ones that has over 80 % ! (On most places actually world wide , due to them and several others was 800x600 and 1024x768)

i still think that a page that is really good take into consideration of different resolutions and make a nested frameset or a small one that opens anew set window..

If it were any higher, I wouldn't be able to read anything... and I guess my eyesight is fairly average.

1024 x 768, both work and home.

As Sazerac said, there is a way to have your page check for these settings and rout people to defferent versions of the page according to their screen resolution. I will look around to find the info on this practice.

As has been request, post a link so we can view your work.

As of January 2001, less than 2% of the Internet browsers are set to 1280x1024. Even people with screen resolutions set that high or higher are prone to run their browsers in a sized window.

Even though the number is dwindling, about 1/3 of the browsers are STILL using 640x480 resolution. This is generally from the small to medium sized business community who have not upgraded their machinery since "if it works, why fix it?" For example, Sally Beauty Supply here in Denton, which employs 300+ workers, still use 80486 computers running Windows 3.11!!

I agree with Saz! I use 1024x768 for most stuff (Browsing, gaming ect) but in Adobe Photoshop or my 3D modeling program I use 1600x1200. (WAY small)

I designed my site to be user friendly at 800x600 and up. Go to www.tgeweb.com and scroll down to the bottom, then click on that black and blue little icon box, and it shows stats for this site, you'll see what people use here to post, and surf. (Below is some of the stats)

1024x768 715765 43.21%
800x600 638439 38.54%
1280x1024 127170 7.67%
1152x864 85135 5.14%
640x480 43812 2.64%
Other 23521 1.42%
1600x1200 22336 1.34%

PS: look at that, 1280x1024 is ranked higher than people using 640x480! So I wouldn't cater to the 640 crowd.. BTW, the stats for this site aren't 100% correct.

Also, when creating your website, you could use percent's instead of actual pixels, so if you're at 800x600 it'll fit, and at higher resolutions it will stretch out to fit that size. I am doing that with my next web design layout for Ironworks.

a lot of my current layout requires me to use exact pixel settings for frames, so the text aligns correctly. what i'm doing is making multiple versions for multiple resolutions. probably 3 pages. low med and high.
i have found a cool java script that i can use for the index page, that detects your resolution and routes you to the correct page.

if you want to get a look its at
