Unable to play, just bought the game

It installs fine, plays the intro and when I start the game I get the gui around the edges. The center section is pitch black with nothing shown in either software or hardware mode.

I'm using a AMD 1.2Ghz, GeForce 3 with DX8.0a (v 12.41 reference drivers)

The manual says an inn should be visible in front of me and if I just click it the screen should change to the inn view. It doesn't change no matter how much I click anywhere on the screen (it just rotates the towns when I click on them).

Am I doing something wrong or did I just waste the money? (Software Etc typically doesn't have a return policy)

Let's not jump to any bad conclusions just yet. Try reading both Saz' Techie Help Desk thread and the Best Tips thread. You should find in both some ideas on what needs to be changed to get this game to run properly for you.

My own suspicion is that DirectX 8 may be your problem. I am personally able to run this game with DX 8 but many people experience difficulties with it. There are posts in both the threads I mentioned which tell how to uninstall DX8 and install DX7.

The other possibility may be your OS - what is your OS? If it is greater than Win98 there are some known difficulties which are also listed in the two threads I mentioned.
