After playing Wizardry 8 for awhile, I was continually finding spell books and being offered them from merchants in the game, but when my spellcasters would try to use them, would get this message "Bloggs is not powerful enough to understand the writing". Then I found an old message that had been posted here by one of the Wizardry 8 programming team (Alex Meduna, Wiz8 Lead Gameplay Programmer / Designer), I got the idea to make a spreadsheet to do the calcuations for me.

The file was built and stored in Microsoft's Excel-97 file format. It has not been tested on any other spreadsheet package at this time, however if your spreadsheet package is able to read MS-Excel-97 files, it should work, but some of the Visual Basic code (for the drop-down boxes and spinners may not work). Microsoft also have a viewer which can be downloaded, but only allows read-only use (ie, it's a viewer, you can't edit the fields, if anyone has suggestions for non-Excel users, let me know).

Basically, all you do is enter in your characters current stats, and the spreadsheet will tell you what spells you can learn, or for spells you're not yet able to learn, it will tell you how many points you need, or why your character can't learn the spell.

I've set up a web site where you can download it and see if this file is of help to you. Visit http://wiz8.web1000.com for all the details.

Feel free to give this message a bump

Great work wolfie. thanks.
I knew there was a way of caculating what spells you could learn but you've done all that which makes life real easy. All the info you need is there and nice presentation too.
Thanks again. I'll be using it heaps.

Thanks for your comments, I'm new to the IronWorks Wiz8 forum (usually hang out on VN Boards Official Wiz8 Board - http://vnboards.ign.com/board.asp?brd=5140 ).

So spread the word, the more people who can benefit from this file, the better!

Just woundering wolfie,
Would it be possible to somehow have the spreadsheet set up so it could accept a save game for the information?
On second thoughts I think that would need a major change of program or coding or whatever.
Oh well just thought I'd ask

Question, can you do a "save as html" and put it up as a web page for those people who don't have MS Office?

You should make the spreadsheet in HTML. So nearly every one can use it, even UNIX users.
