First of all to make the statement that the majority of Americans are uninformed of world affairs, just b/c you have met a few Americans or have traveled to America is absolutely ridiculous...that is why I made the sarcastic comment above. I have been to England and throughout Europe and have met many, many people through my travels, and I am willing to say, for every American that you can find that is uninformed or does not care about world affairs, that I can find one person in Europe also!

My sister-in-laws boyfriend thought that Minnesota was a province in Canada

A flat-mate of my friend, that I stayed with in London, asked if I could see the Rocky Mountains from my apartment when I told him I lived in a highrise in Minnepolis

Again you cannot base your 'majority' opinion of a nation on the basis of having met a handful of Americans...likewise neither can I for Europe!

And Kaz, knowing what is going on in the rest of Europe is not the same as knowing about what is going on in the rest of the world! I could say the same thing about New Yorkers knowing about what is going on in California...while they are states rather than countries, their distance is far greater and their peoples are probably almost as diverse!

Oops - Now I remember that I was going to add that we aren't well enough informed about Asia, Africa, South America and the rest I guess I forgot. BTW I lived in America for six years, my observations are based on the people I met there. And - lets argue the thing about diversity of culture between states as opposed to countries another time, ok? I'm afraid I have to go now.

Thank you for the link.
It was very informative.
I will bring up some of the info. in my next class, as I can relate it to the course.
I will be interested to see what comments will be aroused from classmates, as well.

Just as the majority of citizens of any other country show little interest in world affairs. When in Puerto Rico, I met a man who didn't know what state New York City was in. In the Philipines I met ladies who couldnt name more than one or two states in the USA, In south east asia I met people who didn't know what a world map was.....am I making a point? (this is all true by the way)

Hold on there just a second, - I don't know where in South East Asia you were, but has it struck you that people who live in the poorer nations don't have all our educational advantages, nor do they have our access to media, to books, internet and other resources. It depends on the country, and on the people you are talking to. Some cannot afford education, and in some places, education is not available, or of a relatively low standard, as we would compare it in the West.

It is hardly fair to blame people from developing countries for their lack of knowledge about certain aspects of the world around them!

I think the point being made here is more relevant to people living in rich industrial nations who could know what was going on if they put even a fraction of effort into it, via internet and specialist publications, if not via populist television.

The American Goverment has reaped what it has sown, and as always the innocent people pay. Seeing the hatred generated in the middle east by americas "blank cheque" support of isreal it was inevitable that something terrible would happen.

OK. I think I've got my nose back in joint now. No, you weren't out of line, I just started taking the differences of opinion too much to heart for a bit. Please don't misunderstand me. You said nothing wrong, I just haven't had enough sleep lately.

I think you make very good points; however I stand by my conviction that those with the money have determined what we like more than we have simply because we haven't been given a chance to choose. I understand the point about "if the public doesn't like it, they won't watch and ratings will drop". I DO agree with that, but I feel that it's MORE on the heads of those who have the money and the authority to decide. I will restate something I said earlier...

When I was young, our news was reported (the parts that they would tell us, anyway) whether it was good or bad. Sometimes, my parents and I would be sad for days because there seemed to be no 'good news'. Everything was fear and violence and death all over the world. We still watched it. Then, some news programs started putting little bits of 'good' at the end of the news to kind of brighten everyone up at the end. After a while, they hardly mentioned anything bad at all anymore. They'd gloss over anything negative and they still, mostly, do. My point in all this was and is that, if they all reported the 'cold, hard facts' (notice "facts", not "truth" .) we would have no options. The media started the "popularity" contest that pushed all the bad out. Now, I'm not saying that I think EVERYONE wants to hear what's going on, but I think the media does not give us enough credit. So ultimately the "blame" for fluff reporting and us not knowing enough about what's going on everywhere else lies on both sides. "Them" for cutting out the important stuff and "us" for letting "them".

I hope I made my thoughts clear. If not, at least I tried.

An interesting quote that just came to mind and may or may not be pertinent:

"If you stand for nothing, you will believe anything."

Don't know where that came from or where I was going with it, but there it is.

Yeah, but they were as decieved as we were.
About 99% of the population had no idea the Jewes were being massacred.
All they new whas that Hitler prommised them jobs and food after we left them with virtually nothing.
