I've been reading a few posts today and keep getting confused on all the stats modifiers bonus ac etc so can antone recommend a good book that would explain this to a novice.Thanks

If your interested in 3rd edition rules, the ones NWN is based on- pick up the 3rd edition players handbook and dungeonmasters guide. They are available at most bookstores, direct from WOTC, and via Amazon.
Games like Baldurs gate and Icewind Dale use 2nd edition rules. These rulebooks are out of print, but can be found second hand.
