How many people have protected sex, every day, in the United States? I'd say.. ooh... Let's say, conservatively, a million. Just as an arbitrary figure. Lets say 10% would like a baby out of it. That leaves 900,000 couples, every day, having sex. If ALL of them are using IUD or the rod, that means 891,000 have a great time with no consequences. This leaves 9,000 people a day, stuck with a sprog.

Now I know this is all hypothetical, and the maths almost certainly WAY off (), but 99%, given the scale of this, isn't quite effective enough, IMO.

If you do the math, 99% means that with one couple having sex twice a week, you get one baby a year. That's 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

That's clever, but not entirely accurate. Certainly the more times you have sex, the more chances you have of hitting that 1%, but the effective rate does not go down - it is still only 1% every time they have sex. And if they avoid the 9 days surrounding ovulation, then the odds increase to 100%. If the couple has sex twice per week for a year, there is still no guarantee they will have a child.

But even if they do, that is still better than doing nothing to prevent pregnancy and then killing the unborn child when the inevitable happens - which currently accounts for 93% of the abortions performed.

Winking Re: Election Question

I beg to differ, my friend. You're introducing additional means of contraception, which has already been discussed as improving efficiency even more. Yes... combining a 99% effective method with *anything* else will increase its effectiveness above 99%.

I truly hate statistics... hated it in university three times, and each time I thought I was done with it forever. It kept coming back because it still works.

99% effective means one time out of 100, on average, it will fail. In some cases, it may go longer. In others, it may go less. But on average, one time out of 100, it will fail.

Therefore, if you have sex 100 times with a 99% effective method of contraception, that means that one time out of 100 it will fail. By definition. If it fails more often, it's not 99% effective. If it fails less often, it's also not 99% effective.

I do agree that it's better than doing nothing... "Nothing" is only around 15% effective, which means that you shouldn't have to go more than two months or so....

And please, before anyone takes the "I know someone..." argument: Yes, you do. That's the idea behind statistics and averages. Individual cases can go all over the place. En masse, however, the results will tend toward a statistical number. And statistics is the art of finding that number to try to do something useful with it.

Also remember that 99% "may" and probably "does" include 1% of ass covering.

Speaking of which, you could just go for the 100% effective method of bumlove.
