Sever

The near zero visibility within the confines of the cave was more than a little worrying to Sever. After catching up so much lost ground on his companions, frustration was building up within him as he was forced to slow his progress in the dark. Judging by the tracks at the cave's entrance, he doubted it had seen any sophisticated use in quite a while, which meant traps were unlikely. But there were still pitfalls and other hazards to be weary of. Hazards that could see in the dark. The very hazard they'd been hired to kill, no doubt. Clutching the amulet about his neck, he pushed on.

From deeper within the cave, sounds that were not his own were echoing faintly. The shuffling of heavy feet and the sounds of heavy breathing and.. Bickering! Though not the voices of Pandaros and Xaver...

A terrible thought struck him.

What if i've missed a turning? In my haste, have i overtaken them? Have they already fallen?

There was no way of knowing for sure. His thief's sense of self preservation was screaming at him to withdraw from the direction of the sounds. But something else within him urged him to continue. Loyalty? The notion actually made him chuckle within and with it, his spirits lifted. He was loyal to none but himself and his want for coin. He was a thief. And thieves were at home in the dark...

Drawing his new silver wakizashi in his right hand and his old steel in his left, Sever advanced in silence and in shadow. He knew he may not be able to see any creature ahead with perfect clarity, but nothing and no one would see him.

Xaver

"Aim high," said Xaver as he tapped Pandaros on the shoulder, then he dashed forward, and holding his shield above his head he half crouched and swung his axe at the creature's thigh trying to aim for the spot where he thought the femoral artery would be located.

Pandaros

The scout followed Xaver's instructions, raising his aim and firing into the dark well above the dwarf's head. He fired a second arrow after the first, then dropped his bow and pulled free his sword.

Pandaros hesitated before moving in to attack, focusing his senses on the dwarf and the ettin's struggle, hoping to use the sounds to skirt around his companion and attack the giant from a different angle than the dwarf. He would attack with quick thrusts once he was sure of the monster's position to avoid hitting his friend by accident.

OOC>>>Me loves online dice cause me no owns real dice...

Xaver gave the blind Pandaros the assistance he needed in making his aim towards the giant ettin that was now attacking. There were only two beings in this fight that could see one another, and Pandaros was not one of them. He relied on the dwarf's ability to see in this lowest of lights within the cave and fired when Xaver told him to and where he told him to. The first arrow whistled off towards an unseen target before Xaver got into position, and found an arm (luck bonus from Prayer). The ettin jumped back in surprise at the sting it felt in its right arm and looked over at it with the head on its right. Xaver came in to take a shot next with his axe, attacking the leg and hoping for a brutal attack, but the ettin saw him coming with its left head and kicked at the dwarf, though still receiving a grazing gash in its leg, and missed hitting the dwarf (prayer bonus +1 luck). That is about the time that the other arrow came singing by, but missed the mark and hit the cave ceiling instead, and fell back to the ground in the darkness. The ettin was now engaged in this little battle, realizing that this food was going to be trickier to eat than it cared for...like the other food that had come days before. As the right head turned again to snarl at the attacking archer, the left head sized up its tiny competition with the dwarf and with its massive left hand, reached down and grabbed the dwarf (dex score failed the escape and ettin has high grapple score) and picked him off the ground and slung him into the far wall (what will Vindson say when he sees you've scratched the borrowed armor?) By now, the right head had found Pandaros readying himself with a sword.

"You brains be tasty food! Hold still and me eat you now!"

OOC>>>Xaver receives 6hp damage by being thrown into a cave wall. (you'd never believe how long it took me to figure out how to score that!). The armor is dented up, but still usable. You've lost hold of the weapon and shield you were holding, but they are close by.

The ettin has taken damage from the first arrow and the axe attack. (I don't like to reveal enemy HP scores)

It was like one of those annoying “no-seeum flies”….. one that continually buzzes around you, that you never REALLY see, but know is there… always buzzing around your head… whispering in your ear, or flying past your eye or ear.. something you constantly swat at but never hit.. not really…

You begin to wonder if it ever really even is there… then “BUZZZZZZZ” right across your face again… you swat and swat… to no avail… one of those annoying little things in life that can drive you to commit harie-carie… right on the SPOT….

She covers her nose with her paws, and closes her eyes. She can feel the “other”… but cannot see her.. just like a damn “no-seeum”… she can FEEL her somewhere in her soul… trying to drain her.. trying to distract her from healing… although… REALLY.. there is no cure for what that soul-sucker is doing, now IS there? Of course there is… she just hasn’t figured it out yet… but she WILL… by Goddess… hopefully sooner than later…

She feels the pull of her missing human-side shadow… feels the drain on her natural magic… BUT… (of course there is always a BUT).. she can fight it… maybe not as good as before.. but she has FAITH by Goddess… FAITH!!!!... curious thought…. Why isn’t my wolf-shadow gone? Hmm… now THERE IS the question to study… yes.. need to study that….

Through all the distraction running through her mind and soul, her prayers NEVER falter… NEVER wane or ebb… her body physically may not be healed, but her mind… OH her mind… if she can just keep that damn soul-sucker away long enough to maybe get Ana’s help…

BUT… dare she tell Ana what is happening? The poor pure soul.. why get her involved?...

A large branch of one of the eldest oaks reaches down and gently tickles her front paws, making her move them… Her sharp eyes look up at the elder and her ears twitch….

She looks around, and the moonstone slowly reaches the end of her prayers, and she woofs softly into the breeze…. Gradually everything stops moving and the beautiful song to nature dies slowly upon the breeze as if never it were….

She shakes her head, and swipes at her eyes with a paw absently, then stands shaking madly to remove all the leaves and dirt from her coat…. She looks down, and stamps her left paw lightly on the stone kind enough to allow her to lay upon it during her prayers, and marks it with a rune scratch…

Maybe some day someone like her (doubtful) will see this and wonder about this beautiful circle of oaks with a granite stone in the middle and maybe… just maybe… remember an old story about druids, and magic and wonderful things that happened in the past… she is a dying breed… and knows it… but MAYBE, some young girl who feels suddenly the urge to dance in the wind and sing to the trees will find this spot… and revive some much needed magic to this area…

She is getting too old… nostalgia… she laughs as only a wolf can laugh… then……. Pricking her ears, she picks up the scent of a cougar… near the boys…. Does not sense danger, only hurt and sadness…

Leaping off the rock, she wags her tail once more to the grove, then heads towards the boys….

Xaver

Xaver managed to avoid the creature's kick but a moment later the ground suddenly disappeared from beneath his feet. As the dwarf tried to figure out what's happening, the ground reappeared again, this time at his back, and he felt a searing pain as he hit the cave wall, then the floor.

Feeling himself to see if anything is broken, Xaver reached for his axe and his shield, then approached the creature. This time rather than holding his shield above him, he held it vertically at his side, all the time looking up at the creature's heads. He was waiting for the monster to lower his arm or head to attack him or Pandoros. His axe was ready to swing at its arm - or even neck if he could reach it - just as soon as the creature does that. Should the ettin try and kick him instead, Xaver would try and swing his axe at the same spot he did before.

Pandaros

When Pandaros heard something heavy crash against the cave wall, his heart dropped. Concerned that his companion was in trouble, Pandaros gripped his sword in both hands and charged forward, bellowing a battle cry to raise his courage. He hoped to crash into the beast and drive the blade hilt deep into its gut, leg, or side. If he was successful, he would scramble away quickly, pulling the sword free as he moved.

OOC>>>I can't believe I got a dwarf-toss in there! I see now why so many people enjoy that sport...

While Xaver was picking himself up from the crash, Pandaros charged the giant ettin with the courage not seen in many men, running mostly blind towards a creature that could see him and had voiced its desire to eat him. The ettin saw him coming and leaned over and swung at Pandaros with its giant fist just as Pandaros tripped over a rock in the darkness of the cave and tumbled forward. The attack by the ettin missed (that prayer spell is really coming in handy!). Totally focused on the yelling Pandaros with both of its heads, expecting the dwarf to be out of commission at the moment, the ettin picked up Pandaros with its left hand and was planning on biting his head off. (eek!) That is when Xaver came in and did as he had planned (quickly recovering from the crash), attacking the tree-trunk of a forearm that was holding Pandaros. The ettin jerked back and away from the cutting blade of the axe with a big yell of pain and stood up to his full height again, still holding Pandaros in his hand but now more concerned with Xaver.

"Stupid food bite back!" Said the first.

"We makes them hurt more when we eats them alive!" added the second.

OOC>>>Ettin has received damage from the axe cut to the arm.

Pandaros received 1hp damage from the trip in the dark while running. The pain is in the right ankle. Nothing serious, but will hurt to put your full weight on it for a while.

Xaver

Xaver looked at his companion caught in the creature's grasp then immediately hurled his axe at the monster's arm hoping it would cause enough pain to the ettin to make him drop Pandaros. He then took out his warhammer and got ready to try and dodge the ettin's attack and hit back if possible.

Pandaros

His brain just now catching up with his actions, the scout started to wonder at his choice of a headlong attack. Squirming in the giant's grasp, he stabbed at the fingers and wrist holding him as best he could. Curses accompanied each attempted attack, blurting forth with increasing ferocity as the ettin maintained its grip.

"Stupid cave, *%&@ing giants, stinking town, *%#@ing hero-crap..."

The tirade continued unabated as the scout struggled to break free.
