Are you running the patch??
Are you running in software mode??

YOu can get the patch here:

Hopefully one of the more technical gurus will be along soon with better advice than I can give.

I had a problem with a slow loading and slow running game that crashed now and then when I first started playing it.

I updated the amount of memory I had to 128MB and it works great now.

I've heard of a number of people having trouble with freezes that had (only) 64MB memory. Since memory is so cheap right now, I'd definitely advice adding another 64MB.
If you have any programs running in the background (like virus scanner, Office fast access etc.) try terminating them first.

It really does sound like a memory problem. It took me a hell of a long time to get the game working correctly after trying everything. There are definately issues with the DirectX modes. I ended up playing in software mode (which looks great anyway) even though I've got a Hercules ultra II prophet.

Even then I got occasional crashes if I started up the game without all background processes except systray and explorer shut down (Running with 256mb memory). Stick with it, it's worth it once you get it working.
