I have a 56k modem....and I recently moved house. But, at my new house, my Internet will only connect at 26k. This is really annoyin, as my Internet is going SUPER slow.

Does anyone know why? Can it be altered? It was fine at the old house.....messed at the new!

Just a guess. But check with your phone company. You may be on a line with too many customer on it and your wandwidth is marginal. I have the same problem...But I'm in the boonies.so I can't switch to DSL...*whine*

First up check the conections inside your house - all the way to the main socket of possible. It just takes one dodgy contact to kill your bandwidth.

It shoudnt be more than 20M of cable to the main socket either. 25 tops. More than that you need a booster. (Or so they say). More than 4 devices on one line kills the signal to a degree as well. (Phone, Modem, SKY TV box, thats 3 gone already)

If thats all good, and you havent messed up your modem drivers at some point, then its the phone companies fault. Try getting them to turn up the gain and suchlike.

One point - BT has in the past been known to wash its hands of such matters caliming that 26k is sufficient for web browsing and that it does not gaurantee a connection sufficient for gaming.

It sounds like a dodgy phone line. You should be able to call the phone company and have them check the line quality for you. At least, we can do that in Australia!
