Does Power Attack apply to hurled weapons?

I am pretty sure STR bonuses/penalties apply with hurled weapons, but what about Power Attack?

The description in the manual says "You can make exceptionally powerful melee attacks" (emphasis added). I am reluctant to use Power Attack unless facing a helpless/immobilized enemy or an enemy with significant damage resistance, because it's usually better to hit more often than it is to hit with more power.

Expertise also does not work with ranged weapons.

I did read the description, but I also know that sometimes the description doesn't accurately depict the actual game mechanics.

Incedentally, if I'm using Expertise, will it help when that character is being peppered by archers?

I think so. Expertise changes your AC, and I've seen nothing to indicate that there is any distinction between AC vs melee and AC vs ranged.

Btw, the 2nd lvl spell Protection from Arrows is darn good. Most enemies only use +2 missiles at best, so their ammo rarely outstrips a wizard's ability to protect your character(s) with this spell.
