You and I have something in common! When I was in middle-school, this black girl pushed me off the bleachers in gym, and I fell. We both got suspended! All I did was fall!

And the worst thing about this zero tolerance is that I can't see how it's gonna stop someone that is hell bent on mass murder. I mean is he (or she) gonna think, nah, I won't take my dads shotgun to school and shoot everyone cause I might get suspended? I can't see it.

Home-schooling. On the one hand I wish we could afford it; on the other hand TJ might miss out on some positive social interaction with other children. My neices were home-schooled, until my sister-in-law finally had to put them into public school (and don't get me started on the topic of my brother ).

You're right tho'. The schools do teach trash. Largely cuz our text books suck. Why were we using chem books in twelveth grade that dated back to the seventies. There was stuff that had been proven wrong in them. It's rediculous! In history we learn about how cool Columbus was. Not even a nod at objectivity. The books don't mention how he killed and enslaved people for the sake of gold. I dunno. Doesn't seem worth it to me. I actually was homeschooled. I left school cuz people would constantly pick fights with me and because their families were richer than mine I would get in trouble. It didn't seem worth it to me so I took myself out of school and, with the help of my parents, learned what I thought was worthwhile. I still think the public schools have something to offer. If you want to talk about it more just email me (anecdoteman1@yahoo.com) or start a different thread. Oh. One more thing. To keep on topic (vaguely). Schools of an international flavor (meaning outside the U.S. woo woo amero-centrism) have plenty of problems too. The constant comparisons that are touted so often in the newspapers (U.S. schools suck in comparison to European and Japanese schools. You've all seen them I hope) are kinda slanted. One of my professors was telling me about the year that Germany tested all of their schools instead of just the "Gymnasium" the college prep school. They didn't release the results. Apparently they were too embarassing. I wonder what would happen if we just tested our top east coast prep schools. The comparison would probably be alot better looking. I agree, DeSoya. My high school was full of the most appalling cretins, like every high school. Has anyone else noticed that uss and Neb, from Esthonia and Denmark, make approximately the same complaints about their classmates as everyone else? I suppose, to allow these jerks to graduate, the curriculum has to be simple, and they tolerate a large amount of bullying and misconduct. Like Larry being pushed off of the bleachers. If they had fairly punished the guilty party, some one would have screamed "racism" like Jesse Jackson when those hooligans got into the fight at the football stadium.

Some things will not change, the stupidity of some of the people leading our children certainly doesnt.
I remember the time back in 1989 I was suspended for a week (the first week of school the next year!) for playing songs by the Dead Kennedys and Public Enemy in my 9th grade speech and communications class. The teacher told us we could play a song by neither because they were "offensive" although they contained no cuss words, drug or sex references. So we remixxed "911 is a joke" with "California Uber Alles" and included an intro of the "Star Spangled Banner" by Jimi Hendrix performed at woodstock. Boy was she pissed, but she never liked me anyway because I had green hair and tall mo-hawk! She cut short our presentation which was a mock radio show about music that was considered antidisestablishmentarian. We refused to leave or stop our project until we were done, We did our presentation and gripped the battery powered tape deck that playyed the music. The teacher, a guidance counselor and the vice-principle yelling the whole time. Things like "stop, you listen here" and "get to my office, dont make me repeat myself!" ( i have the whole affair on tape!) They threatened to have us arrested for tresspassing, but by then our 10 minutes were up anyway. Other students did their presentation on mainstream political viewpoints, mimiking sunday talk shows, or talk radio. We wanted to use a radio documentry format (like some of the work on NPR) to discuss how music was being used to speak out about the disportionate poverty of the inner city, Racism of the kind that led to the Rodney King event, the greed of politicians, and how the military industrial complex makes peace unprofitble for the people in charge on both sides of the cold war, topics these musicians were speaking up about within the lyrics of their songs. Nothing offensive, just the kind of politics they didnt show on tv. Cool thing is that suspension to me was like paid vacation. No need to skip, fake sick, or go out of my way to get caught smoking. That day I merely accomplished standing up for myself, what I believe in, and against censorship. If you have a problem with that, oh well, I doubt I'll lose any sleep. Oh yeah, our other classmates, the ones who said it didnt matter to them if our presentation include rap and punk music. Who protested that it wasnt fair right along with us and cheered when we playyed the music anyway. Yeah, we really annoyed all of them into a one day suspension for ignoring directions from an administrator. And that day I only helped those who have no power to help themselves, namely myself, a teenager in school. I am quite pleased with myself. I pissed off those big-heads good! Screw the power trips some school authorities get their jolly off on. "We dont need no education We dont need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Hey teacher, leave those kids alone." ... from Pink Floyd "The Wall"
