on the news i hear about all the rich and famous people and how they show up in puplic with their fancy fur coats and diamond jewels. so far i haven't heard about them giving away more than 50,000 to charities at once. they should make a rule that people over 2 million have to pay some money to taxes for the less fortunate. (e.g. people living on the streets.)

Maybe so, but what about 'rich people' who have earned their money? Who have worked hard for many years to get their wealth? I can understand about people born into money, or being fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and get their money, but the people that have worked hard to earn it shouldn't be put into that bracket in my opinion.

I mean, people like bleeddin' Paris Hilton, she hasnt earned her money. Yet she 'flaunts' it around. Those who have earnt it the hard way, should have also earnt the right to 'show it off' (for lack of a better term).

Do not be so eager to deal out rules. Some of the people living on the streets do so because of their own fault. Im not saying all are, some people are just unfortunate, but there are a few who bring it upon themselves.

So you want to punish rich people for being rich ? That doesn't make much sense, don't you think ?

Some people are rich because they worked very hard for it, others become rich because they are smart and know how to accumulate great wealth. Some are rich because they inherit it. For whatever reason, they have the right to enjoy and spend in which ever form they seem fit.

Forcing people to contribute or to give up a portion of their wealth, no matter how noble the cause, is not right and unfair.

One of the reason why communism was founded because certain people felt that it might be best for all the citizens to share their wealth evenly to focus on the well being of the state rather than personal wealth. In effect, wealth was stripped from the people and went to the state (country) where the leaders get to live like king. What an irony, isn't it?

Thank you Paladin. My thoughts exactly.

There was a thread in Current Events about basketball players donating big money for tsunami victims. There was a news story about Sandra Bullock writing a check for $1 MILLION to the Red Cross. Those are 2 that I just have floating in my head right now, and I haven't even bothered doing any research...

Well actually, the rich already have more money taken away from them in most countries due to them falling into higher rate tax brackets - i.e. above a certain income you pay a lot more tax. So whether or not it's noble or unfair, it's already happening.

Also, the main reason communism didn't work is because if you take away the chance of ever becoming rich through hard work, you take away most people's motivation for innovation and hard work and the whole country becomes lazy and apathetic. Why work harder than everyone else if you get the same wage and same amount of benefit as the lazy people?

Many people with money use it to benefit others. Part of the problem is that when they get started, they may not think about it. Ted Turner apparently shamed Bill Gates into giving back some of the money he has, and now his philanthropic foundation gives away a ton of money. Tens of millions, if not hundreds. A quick Google should find some numbers.

You'd be surprised at how much money people give. Part of the issue is that for many folks, they're doing it for the benefit of helping others. They're NOT doing it so that they get credit and recognition. So you won't see a lot written about it, primarily because they're not bragging about it.

That's not to say there are those who don't give. There are some folks out there who don't help others. Whether it's greed or ignorance, they'll switch over sooner or later.

*edit* Here's a link to a listing of celebrity charitable foundations from 2001. It's not likely to be a complete listing of every celebrity in the world, but it gives you an idea.

Alot of Rich people get Rich by stealing or using other peoples identity to do so. The majority of people who do this don't even get caught. Some who do are originally thought to be outstanding citizens. One sly business guy sold some of an old ladies property near Edmonton for $500,000 to a casino because he obtained varies parts of her ID. The old lady only found out when people came to assess the property. The government compensated her.

Another person had a scam were he would read the obituaries from other provinces and loook for people around retirement age apply for a SIN in another province in that persons name than draw on there old age pension. He could get away with this because the provinces don't communicate and if you die in one province, the other province doesn't know you are dead. The guy made over $100,000 which he invested before he was caught. He got 5 years but it was worth it because of the money he invested.

In Canada identity theif is a billion dollar industry. In the US we are talking multi billions in business. A good many rich folk don't get started in a legit way they just don't get caught starting out to make there first bit of money to invest.

"THE PEASENT HAD A HANDFUL OF BEANS AND THE KING HAD SO MUCH HE WOULD NOT EVEN NOTICE THAT WHICH HE GAVE AWAY. IS THIS FAIR?"
"Yeah, but if you gave it all to the peasent then in a year or two he'd be just as snooty as the king---" began Albert, jaundiced observer of human nature.
-Terry Pratchett, The Hogfather

Give a poor guy some money and he'll become as "selfish" as the rich guy.

Rich people are either lucky or derserve to be rich. Poor people give anything they can to be rich, rich people give anything they can to stay rich.

We're not ants, we see no greater cause, we see "Me,me,me,me,me".

The world sucks, best not to dwell on that really...too much.
