It seems that the game defaults to 2.1 automatically with no options to change back to 5.1

Are you talking about NWN2? Because NWN works normally with my 5.1.

Hey! This sounds like something I need. NWN1 and some other games I play (like Conqueronline) always switch my set speaker settings to 2.1 during game play and I have to go back in and reset it to 5.1 after logging off. I think I tried minimizing once during game play and switching the settings and maximizing the screen to see if I could actually have 5.1 sound, but I do not remember if that worked.
Anyway, thanks for the tip, and I'll give it a try.
