Okay, here's one for the poll books. Everyone always mentions the "Big Billy" spells like Hands of Time, Meteorstorm, etc, as their favorites, and I agree. But what about the beginning spells? Are there any that you still find useful or favorite to use even much later in the game? Keep the spells to 3rd level or lower.

My votes are for three, off the bat:

Illuminate (3rd level Sun spell)
Spirit Eye (2nd level Spirit spell)--don't go dungeoning without it!
Sleep (2nd level Moon spell).

What are your ideas? I was still using these spells effectively and frequently, even in Cet's pyramid on my first play-through.

You took most of the good ones, I would however trade sleep for flamedrop cause those lilies. If I had a whiskah, I would trade illuminate for pain.

I still use burn and zap a lot; they have such a low mana consumption, that with my Oomphaz 25% mana recharge bonus, (and the fact I keep spawn on seldom), I can usually keep my magic reserves fairly high. This allows me "da juice" when I need it to power off one of the big boys against a particularly unruly foe. Bloodlust is also handy to punch my warrior up a bit, but I tend to eschew face-to-face combat except when absolutely necessary. I can't remember if summon creature is 3rd or 4th, but that's one of my favorites as well.

Summon Creature is 3rd level Fiendcraft, so that definitely works, Freudianslip! I've never used it; I need to try it out and see what it does.

Oh, you should! It is definitely an entertaining spell. It (as you probably surmised) summons random beasties to aid you in your fight against foes. I like the fact that you can cast beneficial spells on them as they fight. When fighting Haleubus, I had 4 longtooths standing next to me (well, okay, standing in front of me, as I hid around the corner and healed them when they were hurt..hehe) But, with bloodlust, heroic might, and bless, those boys were slapping out 30+ damage each to the old boy. Of course, I've always been partial to the summoning/necromancy arts. That's probably why, sometimes, I put on my alien tinfoil hat, go to the mall, and try to get people to do my bidding. So far, it's not worked, especially on the security guards who always escort me out.. but when I get my sorcery high enough, all of the mortals roaming those souless strip malls shall bow before me! MWUHAHAHA!

I just started to use charm more often, since I noticed peaceful Boogres dropped all their possessions when charmed. It isn't much, but if it works on other creatures as well it might become quite useful. What if you can charm an heavily armed opponent, let him drop his weapons and then kill him? (Oops I guess I'm feeling a bit nasty today )
Other l.l. spells I still use:
Bless boosts the hit of the whole party at once, which just makes a number of fights last shorter, because the priests and wizards usually have less weapon skill and more often miss.
Stink Bomb works surprisingly well on many high level creatures, approx. halving their attacks on you.
Haste helps disrupting their attacks.

I have this thing with casting Binding Force on monsters who can drop treasure (ratlings, rogues, priests), and then having my rogue/ninja pickpocket them repeatedly. In fact, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Binding Force - it's sort of a low-level Hands of Time.

Haste, yeah, i love hast. Ok, most mosters do not surevive the first attack (firestorm...) but against the big ones, a good entchandet nightblade is better. And so: Hiting faster is healing not so often...

I use Bless incessantly, I cast it immediately when the little cross goes away. Ditto for Illumiate, since even the Cat's eyes aren't that good. Also, I still use Flamestrike (is that Sun level 3?) all the time on mid-level enemies, both for area damage & the nice, low mana consumption.

Oh, almost forgot: VENOM BITE! Every enemy, first spell cast is Venom Bite, then run away & let it take a few off of him before the fight even starts. And it keeps working during the fight! Love that spell...
