Get a portable hard drive, cost like 150$ 200gb (Over here at least) and Norton Ghost. You can use it to zip up you whole hd and port it over to the laptop... and not only that, your system setup from the oldie can be set up on the new computer...

My friend did it and it took about half an hour...

[edit] I see that Ross already suggested it... so look at this as a confirmation... I have to start reading whole threads before I post... second time today this happens...
I don't mind spending $$$ on an external drive as long as it's portable and EASY to access (ie USB would be good). That way I get to keep my file structure etc. that I currently have in my 80GB drive.

Nah, you can only burn to CD not DVD with Windows. Nero should work, I think, I dont use it.

I do use software called CopyToDVD (ironically) that works great for both DVD and CD Burning.

Hmmm...have you actually *tried* to "drag and drop"?

When I did a backup disc of my files on my old computer (before Hiram moved down here), I popped a disc in my laptop, made sure everything was organized (like - all MP3s in one folder, all pics in one folder, etc.) and did the "drag and drop". It worked. Only, it didn't copy them, it *moved* them, LOL! So I learned to click a folder, copy and paste into the designated drive.

(At least, I'm pretty sure that's how I did it. It *has* been two years. )
The vast majority of portable HDs use USB connectivity and many weigh less than a pound with 40+ GB capacity.

Lady- lol, what "he's doing different" is probably having a faster connection. My estimate was for the slowest possible network connection (the oldest legacy ethernet available today) for 100GB. As Seraph said, gigabit ethernet is 10 times as fast as 100Mbps again, so I'm sure he can do it in a matter of minutes if it's a small hard drive.

*overcome by the naive cuteness of some of the advice given in this thread*
What you say makes sense then...I know our computers are superfast.

And I'm glad to have been a source of amusement for you. I leave the technical mumbo jumbo to the hubby. I operate the systems, he maintains the technical end of it. It works for us.

Vaskez, if you scare LadyS away from this thread I will get upset.

LadyS, ignore Uncle Vask's uncouthness. Yes, I've tried to drag and drop and it doesn't work - I can't even open up my D drive (my DVD burner drive) when it has a blank DVD inside it. What am I doing wrong?

Hmm, I noticed when I clicked on Properties for the drive that the CD Recording option was unticked. I've now ticket it and it's allowed me to at least click on the drive. I'll try the drag and drop now to see if it works.

lol Vaskez

Anyways memnoch, I would suggest networking, as it is the fastes, cheapes simplest way, though my second choice would be norton ghost, here at work I have to constantly copy HHD's to new PC's and what not, and although the imaging part may take a while, it literally takes a couple of minutes to install an image from a USB external HDD, and not much more for an IDE HDD, also, if you use Ghost, you will have that image forever (unless you delete it...)

If high tech solutions don't actually work...try drag and drop

Here's something for the stress at the thought of LadyS's departure *hands Memknock a hash brownie*

Bugger! Didn't work. Obviously that Recording thing isn't the answer then, eh.
