First of all, if you havent specialised or dont know that there is such a thing you shouldn't be playing as a mage. Playing as a mage is difficult almost too difficult in the early to middle stages off your mageing career. Specialising gives you big benefits in allowing you to have an extra spell per level.

Conjuring is definetly the best choice cause your not really missing out on anything. Clairvoyance?HA just stealth imoen and run around. Know alignment? HA as if you dont want to attack every bandit for their items and exp. Identify?hmmm forget it just spend the 100bucks. Conjuring is definetly the best choice. Illustionists lose too many important spells for an all round mage. BG2 however is a different story...

Once you get stuck into BG2, you wont be playing with wussy mages, you will be fiddleing with an elven sorceror...MUUUHAHAHAHA cough yeah.

Please tell if you felt mageing in the early stages was easy...

I do prefer mages who can both attack AND identify, this fits both illusionist and transmuter. I dont really use them for anything else, and if I buy a scroll of id every time I need to identify something id have spent AT LEAST 5000 gold pieces if not more (of course in the end you have the money to abundance, I had over 70000 gold pieces, but in the beginning you do NOT have this money.

I've always played Transmuter, they rule. In IWD, BG and BG2 I played em.
You certainly want to identify everything as soon and as cheap as possible...
You can then use the items strait away.

I think that the identify spell is too important to give up, it's not always convinient to find a merchant/temple in the area to identify something and it's often useful to know what something is there and then.

My favourite class is definately a necromancer, as there are vary few (and even fewer useful) illusion/phantasism spells in baldurs gate 1. The guaranteed high wisdom from this school also helps when using the wish spells in SoA/ToB.

I noticed that noone even mentioned my favorites: Invoker and Enchanter. Invokers rock, especially in normal D&D, but even in BG they're still pretty shweet. They're only drawback is the lack of ability in casting Enchantments, but who needs them when your specialty is massive firepower.I do agree with everyone on one point, however: Diviners suck!

specialist mages get +1 to save versus the spells of their school, also all the saves versus the spells they cast are at -1 penalty. They get 15% to scribe their school spells and 15% penalty to the rest. I don't remember if they can cast opposite school spells from scroll. They can't in BG2.
