The game consists mostly of quests, and is chocked full of them. There are too many good ones to list.

Quests are better than the random encounters with monsters out in the wilderness because quests gain you much more experience points, and will always gain you some sort of special equipment upon completing them. So you're on the right track to be looking for quests. You just need to keep playing the game, talk to everyone you meet, and when someone asks you to do something for them say yes.

The best quests come on TOTSC, as it was designed purely for quests and not story.

Durlags tower is probably the best quest in the game.
Wolfwere Island is also a very good quest

Both of the above are TOTSC, and are very large. Most quests in BG1 are quite small in comparison, but still good

Depends - if you want easy experience, go explore the lighthouse area - here you'll find the manual of constitution, plus you'll also encounter a few ogres, dread wolves, sirenes and flesh golems, these will all give lots of xp. Other decent places to go are the maps around the west of Nashkel, where you'll find lots of basilisks.

If it's good items you're after, you're better off going to Durlag's Tower or Ulgoth's Beard.

Actually, you don't even need ToSC for my favorite quest--the Helm of Balduran quest. That thing was SO involved for me, because the first time I played, I win this huge fight against a bunch of high-level undead, then I meet the mage who gives me the quest. So here I am on this quest, and I think I've found the right place when Lothander grabs me & tells me my whole party has been poisoned. Crap, so now I've switched to the Poison quest, when Varci Roaringhorn grabs me & gives me the "Boy's body" quest. I finish those things up, and finally remember that I'm still supposed to me looking for a Helm. I go back to the house I was about to break into, talk to a few statues, go to my next destination, and get in a huge bar brawl.

Involved, huh? All this and more will happen to you when you try to complete that quest.

Once you get into the city itself, there are many quests to undertake. Look into every building (and the sewers) there are surprises everywhere!!!
