Mathematicaly the number 18/100 has no definition (technicaly its equal to .018, but thats reading the number in a moronic fashion)

Practicaly this is a gaming system and not a mathematical excercise. You can define the stats to work in anyway that makes some sort of sense. Hell, in a CRPG they dont even have to make sense, since the computer can do all the work.

In any case, it would be redundant to define 18/100 == 19. So they dont. Dont think of it as 18.xx , think of it as 18 & xx .

I think you meant 0.18 (=18/100) but more to the point...

firstly, 18/xx DOES make a difference to weight allowance, look up the tables in your manual to see what the divisions are

secondly,
18/xx = 18 + xx/100 (but for some reason 18 +100/100 does NOT = 19)
xx = any number 1->100 inclusive, but represented as a 2 digit number, so "100" is written as just "00"

This is becasue it comes from a pen and paper game that is played using real dice, and because a 100-sided die would be totally impractical to both make and use. It is worked out by rolling 2 dice of 10 faces each (called D10), marked from 0->9. The first dice represents the 10's column, the 2nd represents the units column. ie. a roll of '3' and '6' would mean "36". The '0's are worked out as follows: A '0' on either dice means exactly that, except when both are rolled together, when the result becomes "100". ie a roll of '0' and '6' means "06" or "6". A roll of '6' and '0' means "60", etc.
*NOTE* to save time, both dice are rolled together, and different coloured dice are used so you can tell which was the 10's and which was the units

This method is called a D100 or D% or 'percentage roll' etc. It is commonly used in many games that require physical dice rolls.

/me gets out the ph book

16 +1 damage
17 +1 hit/damage
18 +1 hit/+2 damage

ONLY FIGHTERS GET TO ROLL FOR EXCEPTIONAL STRENGTH IF THEY HAVE 18 AS STRENGTH AT CHARACTER CREATION!!!

18/01-50 +1 hit/+3 damage
18/51-75 +2 hit/+3 damage
18/76-90 +2 hit/+4 damage
18/91-99 +2 hit/+5 damage
18/00 +3 hit/+6 damage

Bear in mind that several items will increase strength above 18/00 anyway (several girdles and Crom spring to mind).

It is possible to get a characters NATURAL strength to approx 23. which gives an impressive +5 hit, +11 damage

Anyhow, just some food for thought

My Pally has 19 STR (Thanks, Lum, I don't care what they call you), until he puts his belt on, that is.

hmmm, so i was right. cool lol

Actually, you can take a Warrior (but only a Warrior) all the way up to 24. Or, you can do what I did and hack a Half-Orc into BG1, and get yourself a natural 25 Strength.

'Hacking' a half orc into BG1 isnt really 'pure'.

Base 18 strength.
+ 1 manual of strength (BG)
+ 2 str (SoA final challenges - wrath tear)
+ 1 primary stat deck of many things (ToB)
+ 1 machine of lum the mad(ToB)

I make that 23 as the max strength. I suppose there is probably a ion stone +1 str, and possibly a weapon +1 str.

Anyone care to confirm these numbers for me please?

i dont think having items give you strenght like a ion stone or a weapon counts as "natural" strength

As a warrior, you'll also receive +1 STR (it's +1 Primary stat) upon giving in to the taint when facing Wraith Sarevok.
