Basically, with all the new games coming out you need a tank of a PC to play them. I've begged my parents for us to get a new computer but they haven't done anything. So what needs doing? Shall I upgrade my current components via the internet? Install new components? Buy a new PC? I think the main problem is just my graphics card. For example:

Battlefield 1942
OS: Windows 98/2000/ME/XP I have Win98

3D accelerator: Supported Direct3D wideocard with TGL err... I think I have direct 3d, not sure...

Processor: 500MHz I have 950MHz

Hard Drive: 1.2GB in total I have 16GB so not really a problem

CD-DVD: 4 Speed I have a DVD rom, not sure about its speed though...

Internet: Modem I have broadband so no problem

Graphics: 32MB with Hardware Transfer & Lighting Okay I have no idea what that means. All I know is that I have something like a 3DFX Voodoo3 card or something... It says it supports Geforce and Radeon

So am I right in thinking that my graphics card is the problem when trying to play newer games (not just BF1942)? If so, any reccomendations? Thanks in advance.

Yes, that Voodoo will be a problem. It has no T&L, it dosent have DirectX expansions, it isn't actively supported by anyone. Replace it and the rest of your machine should be adequate. A geforce4 Ti would be a good replacement, but that still not DX9 compatable, so you want one of the GeforceFX range, probably the 5200. (Which is crap, but more power will be wasted since your machine can't use it)

Or you could do a total rebuild, a couple of hundred quid and you could get a decent gaming rig.

I used to have Voodoo 3 3000 up to two months ago whn I bought a GeForce 2 MX 400 for like 7$. There's a page somewhere, try searching for the word voodoolizer. It has power tools and underground drivers. Real good.

Battlefield 1942 is a system HOG!

On my son's 900MHZ machine running XP Pro with 256MG Ram and a 64MG memory card, but with more than a dozen or so additional players(bots or live) his lag makes the game almost unplayable. When I host, and we play with about a half dozen friends, he does pretty good though.

On the positive side, BF is an awesome game! Especially the Eve of Destruction and Desert Combat Mods.

I have a geforce 4 mx 440 with 64 meg ddr ram and i have noticed that eg buildings in vice city don't render untill you are reasonably close (even with draw distance set high) but when tested on the same computer (Athalon XP 2800 512 ddr 400) with a raidon 9000 with 128 ddr ram, there are so many improvements, let alone quicker rendering, greater draw distance but also textures look so much better, almost everything is better.
So deffinatly the graphics card will cause a massive improvement to your games, especially something like BF 1942
