I turned my Oomphaz cleric into a monk (eventually) in my first game. What I did to get around the wait time was simply to go play! Just kept her in the back of the crowd, and healed her when needed. And since it was her third or fourth class, she had plenty of HP and SP of her own...

Why an elephant monk? I read somewhere about a two-ton elephant drop-kicking your heiny, and it sounded kind of cool

I had a few problems getting a monk because I kept going back into town to train other charactors. WillowIX told me to climb onto the top of the town gate & go & do something else for 4 hours. This worked well.
I have poisoned enemies & ran away & got xp when they died, but I have only done this to low level enemies & they died whilst I was fighting others. I didn't move that far away.

And sadly most of the later monsters will be immune to the Venom Bite spell. It works early on and is a great help in the serpent temple. They poison you, why not return the gift? lol

BTW, the game will be hard when you play with a single priest. If you become a monk after the serpent temple, before killing the mantraps you´ll have a high level monk after they´re dead. And that is a fearsome character my friends...
