Unfortunately unless they discover oil in Sudan soon that's all they'll get.
Actually I was upstairs yesterday running audio on a lecture to the war college class of '05, and the British 4 star who came (can't recall his name, but he'll be taking over as head of EUCOM in a few weeks), said that in about a year - year and a half (his estimate for how quickly allied forces could pull out of Iraq) the British will be headed for Sudan, for peacekeeping operations.

Aaaaah, Donut? There is oil in the Darfur region. That's why the arabs are trying to kill off the non-muslem inhabitants.

Sudan
-------------------------------------------------
Sudan has turned around a struggling economy with sound economic policies and infrastructure investments, but it still faces formidable economic problems, starting from its low level of per capita output. From 1997 to date, Sudan has been implementing IMF macroeconomic reforms. In 1999, Sudan began exporting crude oil and in the last quarter of 1999 recorded its first trade surplus, which, along with monetary policy, has stabilized the exchange rate. Increased oil production, revived light industry, and expanded export processing zones helped sustain GDP growth at 6.1% in 2003. Agriculture production remains Sudan's most important sector, employing 80% of the work force and contributing 39% of GDP, but most farms remain rain-fed and susceptible to drought. Chronic instability - including the long-standing civil war between the Muslim north and the Christian/pagan south, adverse weather, and weak world agricultural prices - ensure that much of the population will remain at or below the poverty line for years.

Ooooppppps Ole Holey pastry it seems there is that most evil of substances OIL in the Sudan.

How 'bout we try this again: A UN res. is the most they can hope for 'cause most people won't get off their rear-ends and help them, Oh they'll yap about it, but they damn sure won't do anything. The only countries that might do something are currently engaged elsewhere. Where does that leave the Sundanese that are being killed? Why I believe with the Peace/love/brotherhood of man/we're all in this world together crowd, coming to the rescue. Anybody want to bet how long it takes for them to help.

I gotta say something about Sudan's macroeconomic reforms. If a country goes bust while trying to implement the rules the IMF, it's Banker, insists it must in order to get approval for a loan, then who are we to blame when those macroeconomic reforms fail? Thought for the day.

Surely thou jests T.L., how can an international orginization, do such a thing? After all international orginizations are the way to go,everybody knows they are perfect and can do ZERO wrong.

Well, J.D., whilst you may think your point is solely targeted at international organizations, you forget the level of control Washington Dee Cee has over the IMF and World Bank (sister organizations).

Many of those calls for economic reforms -- from those intended to address Argentina's economic rampages of the 80's to those targeted at Africa countries today -- they fall largely on the U.S. of AAAAAA.

Our country is as much to blame as any. We direct, in large part, the WB and IMF to implement responsible economic measures (as we see them) -- and it ends up haunting us time and again. Argentina is on the dollar standard -- as we were once (not now) on the gold, and then the silver standards. The dollar standard appears to be doing Argentina as much good or ill as the gold and silver standards did this country.

Of course, I think we should go back to them. Call me Adams-ian, or whatever, I care not -- but I read J.M. Keynes and understand his genius.

T.L. I agree the good ole U.S.ofA has lots of influence over the IMF, remember the golden rule He who has the gold makes the rules

While the gold and silver standard are great, I prefer the standard we are really on now, the "Nuke standard" like it or not believe it or not, what holds the U.S. of A up and puts teeth in the full faith of the USA is our Nukes.

Patience. When the oil reserves in Iraq are depleted, then it's time to 'liberate the Sudanese people from tyranny'.
