always follow your word, if you promise to do something you do it.

You will also do your part to ensure that OTHER people keep their word as well. All who do not act in accordance with the laws of established society are in the wrong.

On the other hand, it is nice to be able to help those who are part of a law-abiding and orderly community maintain that order, but a LN character may wonder if his actions would make a difference or only hastn the recovery, and if it is worth risking his life for a few. Also, citizens living under the laws of a tyrant without complaint are just as valuable as those who gladly serve under a kind and wise ruler.
It's about law and order, no matter what law and what order. It's about keeping your word too, so think carefully before giving it. It's about punishing those in your direct surroundings who do not stick to the rules, and, depending on your point of view, it can also be about seeking out any wrongdoers and introducing them to the dark side of the law. Note that in a nation where criminals should be tried you shouldn't threaten to kill anyone and slay only in self-defence. If you chose to go after some criminals and found a cave full of hostile bandits, you would slay them, and hope to be able to at least bring their leader and some others back to the village/city in chains. In a nation where a criminal act forfeits one's life, you should never strike a deal with one of the bandits but seek to slay them instead. Unless of course they look too strong for you, in which case you'll seek help. Think of the LN character as a good policeman and most of the time you won't be far off. But, don't forget a character has a mind, and won't blindly charge forward. |

Yes - you are lawful, but you also have to take care of your neutral part as well. You have to consider if the 'laws' are too biased towards evil or good. Different societies have different laws. Some of them are identical some of them are not. You have to weigh each 'lawful action' on your 'weight of neutrality'.
EX (very simple): A Paladin (LG) could follow the rules: 1) You are not allowed to kill an innocent person. (LAW of the society) 2) You must destroy all evil. ('LAW' of your deity) A drow warrior (LE) could follow the rules: 1) You are not allowed to kill an innocent person (unless you kill his/her whole family, so there are none left to accuse you). (LAW of the society) 2) You must destroy all good. ('LAW' of your deity) A LN character could follow the rules: 1) You are not allowed to kill an innocent person. (LAW of the society) 2) You might kill 'innocent' persons to keep the balance between good and evil, eventhough they seem to be innocent (EX: The movie Terminator II: Remember the scientist that worked on the computer chip from the 1st Terminators arm. He was 'innocent' in terms of the laws of the society, but his work would affect the balance between good and evil). On the other hand, you will not kill people, just because they are evil or good. But if your trusted leader tells you to do so, you will obey orders. Confusing? I think it is much harder to play neutral than evil. But if you are a powerplayer, you are probably also a 'rule bender'. Playing a neutral character sometimes allows you to interpret the rules to your own benefits Insane

Even within a specific alignment there is great divergence, yet these general rules remain:
Reliability: The lawful person will strive to keep his/her word and generally be in control of him/herself. Belief in society: The lawful person generally have respect for the institutions of society and would only disobey them if there is no other option or he/she has concrete knowledge that they are corrupt. Even then he/she might be unwilling due to the ruckus it would cause. Duty: Even though a lawful person might be slothful in nature he/she will always at least have a notion that he/she is supposed to have some kind of function in society. A lawful person will only allow him/herself to be "useless" if severely handicapped or placed in a position where it is socially accepted (being too old to have to work for example). Even pampered nobles often have some idea that they are doing an essential duty for society. This is true for both lawful neutrals, lawful goods and lawful evils.
