Self pity is not a good thing - it leads to depression. However, I am quite self-critical in general. I realise I have many weaknesses and failures (in fact they far outweigh my strengths and successes) but listening to rap isn't one of them

Only Pretty in Plaid if you're a all-female Catholic school band.

Otherwise, might I suggest Mystic Spiral?

If you sift through ALL crap then you strip out the metal and the pop and you're left with some house etc. which is bearable and the good stuff which is rap.
Metal=Crap
House=Crap
Rap=Crap
Pop=UberCrap

In fact all music which has achieved commecial success in the last decade or so=Crap

If you want to hear some good music you need to go beyond the tone-deaf talentless cacaphoney which is MTV.

Checkout the following...
Belle and Sebastian
Bert Jansch
PJ Harvey
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Miles Davis
Tom Waits
The Smiths
The Pogues
Kate Bush
Reinhardt and Grappelli
John Martyn
Nick Drake
Syd Barrett

Cause you don't like it? I think there are quite a lot of bands who didn't give in in playing more 'commercial'. And BTW being a bit commercial isn't that bad, don't forget that a lot of bands became so popular (not in the negative way) that music has become their source of income, with the great result of more live shows .

IMO there's music to like or to at least respect. Like where musicians still care to do their own thing and play their own instruments. Those bands that don't use a computer and can't play anything theirselves.
On the other hand there's this uninspired, fake, really commercial, computer-edited junk.

This debate is pointless since

1) everyone has different tastes and points of view which will not change even slightly due to any discussion on here
2) All your opinions are crap anyway

and just to prove I'm not just dissing everyone but myself, Arledrian has good taste in music for example

True. It is extremely hard to make someone change their musical style.

And everyone who posted that they listen to metal also have a good musical taste. Its just relative. To you metal fans have bad tastes, while to those who listen to metal they have good tastes. Same with rap and any other music.

I agree. Even though I listen to metal I don't like all the punk or nu-metal bands which have emerged lately. (with some exceptions) I mostly listen to prog metal which apart from Dream Theater, Queensryche and possibly Symphony X is a nearly totally unknown genre of metal. I find that if bands have too much commercial succes their music over the course of time is going to decline (Iron Maiden or Metallica for example whose newest albums amount to nothing compared to what they did in the eighties)
