I've been doing a bit of thinking lately, and I'm just wondering how the rest of the world perceives Australia...
I've kinda been thinking about how it feels to be Australian, and what its like to have people chuckling as we suckle the teat of the big world power (the US of A). I don't personally feel a tremendous alignment with my government's policies, but at the same time I am proud (in a strange sort of way) to be Australian.

If you can be bothered, I'd like to hear what you see as the Steriotypical Australian. It could be Crocodile Dundee, or just a sportsmad fanatic. I don't know if any of the Aussies in this forum will influence your perception, but hey.. Just pretend you have to write a short paragraph of what you know about Australian people in general.
If you want to be funny about it, thats cool but I'm genuinely interested in what you've got to say. Not quite sure why... but hey... I am. I'm not going to take things personally either, so don't be afraid to let loose.

Also, if you are Australian, how do you feel about being aligned to the land downunder... or do you feel no bond at all...?

Thanks if you reply
No hard feelings if you don't.

Cheers

I don’t know much about Australia, but I don’t think all Australians are like Crocodile Dundee. I'm typically not one to generalize, as generalizations are almost always wrong, but then again I just made a generalization about generalizations so I will just stop now.

I guess my perception of Australians, based on those that I have met and interacted with, would include: friendliness, a general cheery attitude, a passion for life, and not afraid to tell it how they think or feel it is. Again, this is just based on my own limited interactions.

While I have an Aussie's (<---is that right?) attention:

I heard that Australia has a holiday dedicated to honoring the Aborigines. I forget the details, I recall it had something to do with addressing past wrong-doings against them, sort of a holiday of reconciliation. Please correct me if I am wrong and give me more details either way.

When hearing about it, I wished we here in the U.S. had a similar holiday for our own indigenous tribes.

Chewbacca...I don't think we have such a holiday...Or perhaps i'm simply not aware of it...Our present government with Johnny Howard isn't exactly big on apologizing for past wrongs and has never actually said sorry...which is a shame i think...i mean...how hard is it?

I haven't heard of the reconciliation holiday either, but hey.
Bummer about Howard being so tight lipped... It only suggests that he's still trying to sweep the past under the carpet. Saying sorry wouldn't make a difference, but its an acknowledgement of wrong doings in the past which at present most people don't even know much about.
Anyway... don't get me started on reconciliation.

I know generalisations are generally wrong, but hey... everyone makes them, or at least they are so regularly made all around us that we can't help but notice them.

Edit: BTW, Nice Sig Bristowe, very classy

If all Australians are as crazy as Steve Irwin then we have a problem . Naa just kidding. The guy is very funny . The programs are great.

Don't know any Australians but I've only positive stuff to say about Australians and the big land downunder. Always been a dream to visit Australia one day and explore the great nature.

I think the of typical Australian much like the typical American, too hard to pin down too much of a mix of cultures, peoples, and ideals to say this guy here is the average.I don't think you can sit down and watch the croc hunter or romper stomper and know what it's about.Even when you meet an australian here you can't say that's what thier like because a traveler from any land is obviously more the adventurer, outgoing and friendly would be common traits to have.I'm not trying to sit on the fence on this I just don't see it as a black and white issue. If I could attribute anything I guess it would be a love of good drink, good food, and good friends.

Heya mate,
If you ever come down to melbourne, certainly drop me a line. You may have a little trouble understanding me though... I have a killer accent. Maybe I'll just have to put on an american accent for you
j/k

Good to see you've made it here, hope you have a top time, and go well with your studies.

My perception of Australia is fairly simple:

A civilized nation along the coast. Less civilization can be found as you go inland (in other words, fairly similar to Canada: lost of civilization along the US border and nothing as you go North).

Climate is fairly warm and humid along the coast, dryer as you go inland. Good breeding climate for a wide variety of reptiles and bugs.

The typical Australian would be similar to a typical Canadian or American: he works his 9-5 and has a nice family. From there, you can branch off into the strereotyped Australian, like Crocodile Dundee or the Crocodile Hunter (I love Steve). Of course, you also have aboriginal tribe.

Key points to note:

- You drive on the wrong side of the road
- You say "mate" alot
- Your summer is our winter
- Your toilet flushes clockwise

and,

- Just like Canada and the US, most of your European ancestors were criminals

EDIT:

- Like Canadians, you can drown our American friends in ANY drinking contest
