"The Last Stand of Borba"

Kharum - Dwarf - Fighter - Level 10
Arman - Human - Paladin - Level 10
Hershal - Halfling - Thief - Level 12
Mythas - Elf - Cleric - Level 10
Bonga - Halfelf - Bard - Level 12
Borba - Gnome - Illusionist - Level 11

The bottom of the boat scraped across the pebbles of the shore as the adventurers, and Ned, arrived at the cold island. The only question was, where was Hjollder? The time to contemplate this was thinning, as strange spirits and shamans lurched towards the party. The two fighters readied their weapons and, for the sake of their weaker comrades, charged. The shaman was the first target - although weak to begin with, give a wizard enough time to buff-up and they can become the toughest on the field. The shaman fell with a satisfying thud, but there were many wights. These spirits were heavy-hitters, and the life of the fighters was rapidly falling. Hershal with a bow, Bonga with a crossbow, and Mythas and Borba with slings, the four launched a variety of missiles - determined to aid the heroic fighters whom they admired so. Kharum, although being the healthiest of the group, had to escape due to the fact that he was being targeted by most of the spirits - the cost of being the front fighter. Arman took over while Kharum fell behind with the others, lobbing axes. Arman was in trouble... He drank a potion of healing, but it's effects were soon negated by the spirits. He died. Everyones hearts fell and they were now firing off missiles faster than ever before. The spirits took the missile damage, turned towards the group, and lurched. They kept lurching. Mythas hid behind the others as he cast 'Raise Dead'. Arman was back - although on the brink of death. He drank a potion of healing, picked up his equipment, and charged the spirits from behind. At this time, the spirits were already hacking away at the group, and screams of pain could be heard from Hershal and Bonga. Kharum couldn't bear the thought of the two friendliest of the group bearing so much pain. He switched to melee. Luckily, the focus of the spirits attack wasn't on the two fighters, so they would be fine even with their low life. Hershal and Bonga had retreated - behind Ned. Bonga sang the War Chant of Sith, inspiring Kharum, Arman, Mythas, and Borba. The spirits centered on Mythas; the only person who could raise fallen comrades. The fighters slashed furiously at the last two spirits. At the same time, they scored critical hits, and the spirits fell with a tremendous wail. Panting heavily, the group examined their wounds - except Borba, who hadn't been hurt at all. The party agreed that if they were ever going to fight the rest of the spirits on this God-forsaken rock, they needed to rest.

The rest was interrupted. Four strange creatures staggered towards the group, making moaning sounds. They looked bigger and thicker than the other spirits. They also moved slower - best compared with Umber Hulks. As before, the four weaker-in-combat members launched missiles while the two fighters sprang forth with great energy. However, despite their eagerness, one could not overlook the fact that their life was at a critical stage. They both drank a healing potion. This did not exactly help, as these brute-of-a-beasts knocked them both down with easy swipes of the claws. The other four of the group screamed as the blood of the fighters' corpses seeped across the black mud. Mythas did not have another 'Raise Dead' spell prepared, so they were going to have to win this fight in order to raise their comrades. Hershal was targeted. Threatened by the overpowering size of the creatures, he ran. Bonga and Mythas also ran for cover, leaving a helpless Gnome to be their saviour. Of course, he knew that he was no contest for these creatures which had so easily wiped out his two friends. He ran towards Hershal for help - the creatures followed, killing Hershal as they went by him. Borba glanced around him to see where Mythas and Bonga were lurking. They were behind a large rock, urgently beckoning the Gnome towards them to seek cover. Borba ran as fast as his little legs could take him, but the four monsters were approaching fast. Bonga leapt out in front of the monsters, pushing Borba behind a bush. With a courageous battle cry, he brandished his morning star and rushed into what he knew would be his last battle. With strikes so simple, Bonga was down. Touched by the bard's heroism, Borba rushed in to avenge his friend, but didn't have time as Mythas also charged to save the Gnome. Stronger in combat than the bard, he was able to get in a few insignificant blows before he too was mercilessly whacked aside.

This was it. The fury built up in Borba was about to be unleashed. It was time for "Borba's Last Stand"...

Checking his spells, he decided to test a magic missile, to work out their magic resistance. As the balls of light smacked one of the creatures, it didn't react too much. Threatened, Borba unleashed a 'Cone of Cold' only to find that they were immune to cold. They were coming close, so the Gnome decided to try some hit-and-run tactics. To give himself more time, he summoned some creatures. However, he was disappointed when they turned out to be beetles - the same weak beetles from the cellar in the Easthaven Tavern. The beetles were easily dispatched from swings of the creatures' fists. Desperate, Borba cast 'Cloudkill' hoping to suffocate his enemies - they were immune to it... Borba sank to the floor, waiting for the creatures to loom over him and kill him. His spells were pretty much useless, and his skills in combat were nothing to write home about. Suddenly, with a gleaming smile, he sat up and laughed. He was about to die - he knew it - but he couldn't stop laughing. If he was going to die, he'd better make the most use of himself while he can. He stood up. He raised his staff. Rotating the shaft above his head and on all sides, he rushed into the mob of creatures. He managed to hit them once or twice, but the damage wasn't really noticable. He had all this built-up energy just waiting to be released, but it was being wasted by his underaverage combat skills. He cast Haste. In his confusion, a Cloudkill was let loose on poor Ned - the enthusiastic young lad was wiped off the face of Faerun. With his extra speed, Borba sprinted all around the island, attracting even nore creatures, spirits, and shamans. He didn't care - he was going to die. In his madness, a strange humanoid spoke to him. Borba demanded to know where Hjollder was - he was the only person who could save him. The stranger insisted that he was aware of no 'Hjollder' and turned hostile. Borba kept running. He came to a small cave. He heard a high shriek and turned around to see wailing virgins. He had read about them - very dangerous. He longed to be with them, but he managed to resist and escaped. Back on the surface, tons of creatures were at his back. Still hasted, he headed for a small island which had some sort of a lighthouse on it. It was connected to his current island via a thin strip of land. Maybe he would be safe there.... He would have been, had it not been inhabited by three monsters of the same kind which woke up his group! The way back had been blocked off. Borba headed for the corner of this small island, praying to the Gods that he would not be sent to the abyss. The creatures stomped towards him. Standing directly in front of him, they all raised their clubs at the same time - clubs twice the size of Gnomes. With a great crunch, the clubs had been slammed...

EDIT: Couple of spelling mistakes

Jaradu,

Woo Hoo! Pretty ballsy: taking a trip to B.I. with characters mostly only level 10 and 11. Typically this trip is made by parties AVERAGING 13+ . Did you clean up everything in IWD, first, all the way through the badges in LDD?

Good rendition of "Borba's Last Stand."

Thanks everyone !

NobleNick: Well, I got the first badge and did a teeny bit of exploring down the spiral staircase in the circular dwarven room. Yes - it was tough on the Burial Isle, but quicksaving before every rest helped a lot . I am currently facing the dragon dude(ss?) who is VERY hard. Bonga and Hershal are now level 15, Mythas is about 13, Borba and Kharum about 12, and Arman either 11 or 12 (Geez, Paladins level up slow!).

If you return to a certain place in Severed Hand with quest items, most of which you find in LDD, the total XP for all items delivered is around 400,000 (IIRC). It is definitely worth your while...

ALso, there is a awesome (and I mean AWESOME!) kick-assassin weapon in LDD that only a Pally can use. I think it is probably worth more to your group than the 400K expo.

That's only 2 of the 5 (at least) good reasons I can think of for doing all the badges before HoW.
