The IRA disarming gave me a little hope for peace. I remembered the last time when a seemingly hopeless situation turned around. Growing up I never thought that the wall would come down, or that the cold war would end.
That was my reality, a reality I had been born into. However it changed. The wall came down. Gorbachev ushered in glasnost and the Union collapsed. Where was I? Still in High School. I remember hearing the song by Jesus Jones "Right here right now." again and again. I had a friend who thought it was sarcastic, but most thought it was sincere. When I was in Berlin earlier this year, and stayed with a former Easterner living in the west, I was struck at how bizzarre the concept of putting up a wall to prevent humans moving around actually was. Such a ludicrous situation. I wrote about it in a Sojourner thread I believe. Anyway, I'm wondering if any of you guys have knowledge of where you were and what you were thinking when the unthinkable happened. I couldn't believe it. It allowed me to be optimistic about the future. That positive change can and does occur. ------------------ |

I was five years old, playing with my toys and not in the least bit interested in the division of Germany, I'm afraid. I find it in an interesting subject nowadays though, and it's good to know that Germans can once again live in unity without the iron curtain.

It came down 1989.
I was crawling around in my parents' appartement in Munich, at the time. However, I am afraid to say that in some respects, the Wall still stands. Old prejudices die hard, even after 12 years. |

Wow, alot of 13 year olds here. More then I imgined. Now to be serioud on Yorricks thread.
I, of course, dont rember anything about it. As Alex said, I do find it intresting now though. I know the Scorpions (German Rock band) made a song about it called "Winds of Change". I know the presdient tryed to say somthing in German that means "Bring that wall down!" But he actually said somthing about a sandwitch ------------------ So if in the forest look behind you, because that where the ranger is going to be Grand-Jester and Spam Monitor of Laughing Hyenas Messenger of the Emerald Dragon May a pregnant yak chew on your ear for all eternity. I was in Greece at the time, in Palio Psyhiko....i remember watching the news on TV, and seeing the footage of the wall coming down. I was eight years old at the time.
