i am right now in stout mines and in desperate need of a pick axe!!. plz tell where can i find one?

Some of the insane dwarves drop them IIRC. Also, check those side-rooms that branch off of all the hallways. You can find a pickaxe lying on the ground or something in some of them.

Yep, they're laying around somewhere. You should find at least one, deeper in the mines.

One sure pick axe is on the first floor (I mean one floor down from the king) in the "hall" with two gem ores. The pick axe is lying on the ground. There is only one "hall" on the first floor so that you cannot miss it.
Next sure pick axe is on the third floor in one of the "halls" there, again, lying on the ground. As it has been stated already, insane miners and guards can drop a pick axe when you kill them. But these pick axes aren't sure, they can or need not drop them. There is no other source of pick axes in the game. Also, pick axes are useful only in the mines.
