OMG is this game ever addicting. It's AoE: LotR... but better. I'm really impressed by it so far, in the early going.

This game is not good. It is bad. Very bad. Once you build your first nuke hero, you will understand.
EDIT: really stupid spelling error.

Lose track? No, it's that heroes are the it. Just take a wizard, give him Teleport, a horse, Word of Power, and you got yourself a mobile nuke. Heroes are seriously too powerful, the rest of the units are here just for eye candy, to look good when your hero blows them up.

Umm... if this were a strictly Single Player game, I'd be kinda OK with not using something..
But this game is an RTS. Primarily for Multiplayer. And it sucks. At one point of the development, the devs must have just said "You know what? Screw balance! Everyone working on balance should from now on work on eye candy!"
In BFME1, the Heroes were the backbone of the army, needed for supporting your troops, countering enemy troops and heroes and just plain being powerful. in BFME2, the heroes ARE your army. They do everything. There's nothing in the game that 4-5 squads of men can do that a single hero can't. It's like Hero of the Rings: Battle for Best Hero.

I expected so much more from this game with the freedom to build where you please and all that, but all in all it was just a big disapointment. I actually liked the first one better.

I never played the first one... if I like the second this much, I can't imagine what the first one's like.

The first one, as bad as it may be, is infinitely superior to the second one. Tactics and strategic placement is much more important, and base-building is simple, which I kinda like because it makes for faster gameplay and more important decisions. Heroes are there to support, and they are important, but the armies are what really matters. It's no Dawn of War(one of the best RTS games I've ever played), but it's much more fun than BFME2.
