For a while now, I've been getting emails sent to me with bogus subject headings such as 'New movie award' and 'This is my new account' from an online dating site. The message within is always the same: 'Date real women tonight' blah blah blah. No unsubsribe service (no surprise seeing as this obviously isn't even a legitmate business) is displayed within the email. So today, for the first time, I click on the link to see if there is any way to stop these emails. It just lead to this stupid dating site, a quick skim of the page revealed nothing, so I resigned myself to my fate and closed the window.

Then I get an extremely annoying, unclosable, and quite frankly disgusting porn popup. I CANNOT GET RID OF IT. Clicking on any of the links on the popup only bring up new, closable (thank goodness) windows. Is there any way to close it without rebooting altogether? Is there any way to stop this at all? I'm getting quite frustrated, since I'm playing Diablo 2, and if I reboot I'll have to begin again. Any ideas?

/RANT

Thanks, pcgiant.

Press CTRl-ALT-DEL , select any instance of your browser (probably internet explorer) and hit "end task". That should crash out all the browser windows and get rid of the problem.

Aaaaah, thank andrewas, but I forgot to mention I've already tried that. For some reason, it comes up with the "Unresponsive" dialog and when I click end End Task, all other browser windows crash except that popup one, which leads me to believe it isn't really a browser window, but something else, which does not show up under Task Manager. This is strange. I think soon I'm going to reboot the computer, and if it's STILL there, die.

You know, if you used a sane OS you could simply run Xkill on it. But not with windows. Which version do you have? Win98s sorry excuse for a task manager cant help you, but winXPs you can switch to process view and kill things in there.

It's alright now (I hope), I've just restarted the computer and it has gone. But thanks for your help, andrewas!

Do you have a block email option or spam filter, try to put that on. Also clicking the unregister from this list doesn't work in most cases, it goes like 'hey someone uses the address and is active let's send him more'

Get a pop-up blocker or a personal firewall.
For closing popups which open faster than you can close them use Alt+F4. Just Hold it until the "Restart Windows" dialogue comes up. You need not start Win new but if you got that far you should have closed almost any application.

i would have suggested Alt+F4, but if Alt+Ctrl+Del doesnt work, then that probably wont either...

philip, the problem is that they set up a new address at a different domain each email, so it is impossible to block them. I really hate the way they don't consider that people might be offended/annoyed at the content. I'm getting like 5 emails a day from them!

I use a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical with 5 buttons. I assign the thumb button to "Close Window". I can usually close those popups (with no close button) by pressing the thumb button; very quick. Although you seem to be describing something more serious...

If you're mad, have you ever tried friedspam.net? I haven't, but it looks like a funny way to retaliate
